This is probably how all the libraries will look like in the future – lots of gadgets and no books. The US is about to get the first bookless public library.

The city of San Antonio is Texas is to introduce the new type of library, where there will be no books. Instead of printed copies the library will be loaning out e-readers and offering thousands of titles for the devices.

I like that! However, as I have discovered with OUR St Mary's County library, there are HUGE problems with the ereader online system. They limit the number of ebooks you can check out and if you are a "fast" reader, they will lock you out of the system because you check out too many books in short period of time.

I can go to the library and check out 20 books, return them before the two weeks is up and check out 20 more.

I can go online and check out 4 books and return them within a week to check out 4 more books, and then get a notice that I have an "on hold" book. Finish reading a book, return it and check out the "on hold" only to be told that I've checked out too many books and they are locking me out of the system. That's fcked up so I don't use the library anymore.

I can get all books somewhere else online for free.

So I think libraries are obsolete and shouldn't be funded anymore and are a complete waste of my tax dollars.

Agree to some extent, but not yet. I'm sure this will happen in the future, but for right now, the current libraries will still be needed. The technology has to work better and has to be dirt cheap ( a lot of JPCs need the library!).
