the same person who sculpted the Marine Corps Memorial also sculpted the Crucifix that is hanging in St. Nicholas Chapel on base. There have been numerous articles, over the years, about the relationship between the base and the Marine Corps Memorial. There is even a monument in front of the Chapel depicting the memorial and it's associtation with the base.

Flags of Our Fathers is now on DVD.

Also, the companion film, Letters from Iwo Jima, was absolutely brilliant. It's told from the Japanese perspective. Together, they form the most fascinating war saga since The Thin Red Line (which, in my opinion, was far better than Saving Private Ryan).

Great movie. It answerd a few questions for me. I also did some reading on the internet about the event and the movie seems to be right on. :yay::yay:
