Apparently 1/2 mile as the crow flies, but a lot of elevation. He also met his wife camping so he did have a little experience. The rescuers said they had a tough time just going where he went because of the tough terrain he went over.

It sucks, he did everything right for his kids and his wife.. hope his kids grow up understanding what he did for them.
 
I also just read that his father had a satellite repositioned to get a better view of the region. How's that for trying? I guess he's a big wig in the aerospace industry.

Big name in technology news. He was the senior editor for longtime technology news website CNet.com and used to be a television personality for TechTV. He was also on MSNBC Live back in September, his last television appearence.
