aka "fake flowers"

Paging @kwillia :jet:

So the weather here is always something and this winter we've been participating a lot more than usual with cold weather and even significant snow. But even normally there's brief but intense rain and assorted storm systems.

So I gave up on putting in flowers and other plants and went all fake. Or floral decor, as I like to call it. Neighbors have spent hundreds - some thousands - of $$$ making their yard and deck look nice....only to have it wiped out by Mother Nature. After this last snow they figured winter was over, so they went out and spent a bunch of money planting things....only to have them die an ugly death when the temps got down to freezing last night.

My deck and yard, otoh, look ah-MAZING! :diva: You have to get up close to even realize they're fake, and the only real giveaway is that....they're not dead.

I think I'll start a trend.

My mother loved fake flowers. She scarred me for life. If it's not real I'll do without. Dried flowers are a different thing if encased in glass.

My neighbor puts fake florals in her window boxes all year long. Hangs out the window and changes them out seasonally. Some more obviously fake than others, but always looks great.

I really love the act of picking out flowers and plants in the spring and spending the time planting them all...then by mid-July I've forgotten I even have flower beds and they're usually dying  I should probably invest in fake plants.

Ever catch yourself feeling a plant or flower to see it it is real? There are just sometimes I can't tell visually and am always rubbing a leaf or flower petal to determine if they are real or not.

my dad would sniff them. I had some little white wildflowers in a vase on the kitchen table when he came for a visit. When he bent down to sniff.. I held by breath..because I thought he would be disappointed in me not having the real kind. He actually liked them and complimented me on how real they looked.

My winter arrangements. Spring/summer are usually real. I love making fake arrangements.

And Michaels is my favorite spot to make purchases, which I haven't had to do for years!

Shew, flowers! Thought Vrai was thinking of going the Dr, Jill route for clothing and furnishing.

I found my happy medium! I definitely incorporate fake decorative plants and flowers where it matters most. But I also incorporate hardy year round plants such as flowering vines and tall growing butterfly bushes that are attractive to pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds.

I also sow areas of self caring flowers for the butterflies, pollinators and birds such as zinnias, marigolds and a variety of sunflowers. Dead heading the seeds at end of season allow me to replicate each year without financial investment.

The fake stuff is super important for my sanity when the brutal summer timeframe takes its toll. I can still enjoy my oasis once the sun retreats.

I haven't gotten to Fake Plants yet, basically because my front bed gets soooo much sun, I think they would melt. I am redoing my bed this spring and am trying out this new method. Bury larger pots in the dirt and just put the new plants directly into them.
