FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A 15-year-old boy threw a football at a pregnant teen's stomach twice, causing the baby to be born prematurely and die hours later, authorities said.
The boy threw the football at his friend, also 15, while they were at a Boys & Girls Club playground last month, according to a Broward County sheriff's report. A medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, and state prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine whether to file charges. The boy is not in custody.
Maria Schneider, assistant state attorney in charge of the Juvenile Division, said it was not an easy decision.
"When somebody shoots somebody in the head, it's very easy to say they wanted to kill the person. We're looking at a situation that's not that cut and dry. We need to look at all of the facts involved," Schneider told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Schneider said she is reviewing statements and records and will likely make a decision on charges in January. She said she will consider the boy's age, intentions and state of mind when she decides whether he should be charged. Neither teen was identified in the report.
Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper said the death was not an accident.
"You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that if you hit a woman who is pregnant in the belly, that you can cause an abortion," he told the paper.
Schneider and Perper did not immediately return phone messages left Friday at their offices by The Associated Press.
According to the report, the boy had questioned the girl two weeks before the confrontation on why her stomach was "sticking out." She said she was pregnant and was expecting to give to birth in a few months, the report said.
After being hit Nov. 21, she was brought to Plantation General Hospital, the report said. She told the doctor she was pregnant and having pains in her stomach due to being struck in the stomach, the report said.
The next day, she gave birth prematurely as a result of being hit, the report said. Later that morning, the baby was pronounced dead.
The report does not say how far along the girl was in her pregnancy. The sheriff's office does not explain why the girl did not report the incident until Nov. 30. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide on Dec. 1.
Frank Till, CEO of the Broward Boys & Girls Clubs, declined comment.
