...the 95 was just one we were looking at. Sounds like you know your Jeeps.

I'm looking at another one, a 2000 with 95,000 on it, 5 spd, 4 cyl that's kinda rough; rough looking soft top, bad carpet, both doors the little strap hooks on the door are torn out. It was in an accident that, apparantly, just bent the left front quarter panel. Whoever straightened it out made it look right and the paint looks right. It drives fine and I don't think the accident was bad. Someone also bent a rim somewhere along the way.

What do you think of 2000?

PS: the price is getting right.

I had a 1976/8 CJ-7 with the AMC 304. It was a blast to drive, easy to work on. It was a 76/8 because the guy who sold it to me said it was a 78 but parts for a 78 did not fit. Turned out it was a 76 instead.

Make sure you take it out on the highway and try to maintain hwy speed. My old 4 cyl wanted to go backwards on the hwy with the top down.

The TJ's (97 and up) have additional emissions control stuff on them, increasingly so with each year which can be a nightmare.

I think there's 3 oxygen sensors on the 2000's, and two catalytic converters.
The 4 cyl transmissions were never known for being all that strong, but are EXPENSIVE to have rebuilt or replaced. Count on $3000 for that, should you need it.

Sounds like it had a rough life. Carfax it. Carpets, seats and NICE soft top can be had for 1,000 to 1200. Those little door hook thinga-ma-bobs are even replaceable.

www.quadratec.com for jeep stuff, and a REALLY good forum.
www.adrenalineoffroad.com for new and used jeep stuff, as well as a staff that knows jeeps inside out and backwards. Ask for jeff and tell him I sent ya.

And if you get a jeep for your kid, never let him find out about Quadratec, Paragon AP, or Rousch Creek. For a monster will soon emerge.

...I did carfax it. That's how I found out about the accident. I got it up to 65 with no problem...with top on. It's definately not been loved much, which means, I'd think, service intervals were ignored.

So, for $5k...$300 for carpet, $800 for a new top. Maybe new rims. Drive train seems storn; no knock in the engine, breaks are good, no whine in the tranny.

Thanks again.

Where's you find the '95 and for how much?

A couple more cents...

With it being in an accident, while it might appear minor, you never know how much hidden damage there might be.

If you get a chance to look at again, pull the oil and tranny dipsticks, check the looks and smell of the respective fluids. Take off the radiator cap, and take a look at the fluid. Look for oil/fluid leaks, especially around the valve cover, oil pan, tranny pan, transfer case ,front and rear differentials.

Take a look at the brake pads and rotors. Do the bouncy test to check shock and suspension travel. Did you put it in four wheel drive (hi and lo)? Look for rust on the undercarriage.

Check-out autotrader.com and pick-up one of those truck-trader mags.

Jeeps are great vehicles as long as someone has kept up with the maintenance. Plenty out there, so you might want to keep looking. Good Luck

AND I happen to have an extra transfer case, axles, and a hardtop in really good condition that I could let go for a song should the need arise.

How much do you want for that hardtop? I have a '93YJ that would love to have it....

....Zachtly.

That's the great, looming fear, the unknown. It tracked properly, didn't pull when applying breaks and didn't wobble or shake any more than any other older Jeep I've ever driven. In short, it felt steady and solid, actually more so than our '92 which we got rid of because I'm stupid.

I did check the oil. Is there a stick for manual trans? I thought that was checked via the fill plug down on the unit? Rad looked good. No leaks noted underneath and it had been sitting for some time; dead batt and started up pretty quick with a jump.

I put it in and out of 4 hi several times and turned in a parking lot in 4 hi. Didn't do 4 lo.

It strikes me as a mechanically sound yet abused Jeep that I could get cheap and pretty up for a grand or two and still have a Jeep I paid less for one that was good all the way around at the get go, ie, good kid car as it ain't doing the commuter or long trip thing.

Good points, Air man.

I know nothing
Although Im a jeep owner, I would suggest getting something that gets better gas mileage.

maybe a Honda civic or ford focus....

If your going to get a jeep for a daily driver, at least get one with fewer miles on it than 95,000.

As a first vehicle and daily driver, Id get something with lower miles.

$200 and it's yours! I bought it used two years ago for $400 and never used it. All the glass is good, good seals and all new hardware. Lift gate and lock works fine. Has rear window wiper, just don't know if it works or not. guy I bought it off of never hooked that part up.

I need to pressure wash it. It's mildewed from sitting outside, but there's no cracks in the fiberglass. It's white.

May he R.I.P. :frown:

I vote you go with something more reliable like a good, used Honda Accord or Civic. You're going to have a couple of kids driving this for a couple of years. You don't want to replace one problem vehicle with another. Honda's are known for going and going and going and going ... and as someone else pointed out, the gas mileage for an older SUV is going to bite into someone's pockets.
