besides an air cast, is there anything doctors can do for a fractured ankle? was told that i should be in a regular cast, but dr said i would be better in an air cast. is that the right thing?

So you are asking the internet if your Dr. Is right? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he knows the type and degree of fracture and since he is a Dr, knows best. But if you aren't convinced I would get a second opinion, but from a orthopedic, not the Internet.
the thing is when i was at the ER last night, the only one that saw me was the nurse, the xray tech popped his head in and said it was "chipped" but with the release papers, it said fractured ankle. i would have thought with any breaks or fractures they would have put you in a hard cast.

I'm not a doctor, but I've broken no less than 17 bones and have had orthopedic surgery 8 times.... So speaking from personal experience I can say that a chip is classified as a fracture, and hardened casts aren't always the solution. The Dr. Knows what he's doing, an ortho might see it different and put a hard cast on it, but chips aren't something that is going to heal by immobilization, it needs rest and time. Good luck!
The ER doesn't cast you that Im aware of. They tell you to follow up with an Orthopedic Dr.
Again...depending on the type of fracture, you are right. Stay off of it a long as you can, and if you aren't allergic to Motrin (Ibuprophen), you can take 600 mg every 6 hours, or 800 mg, three times a day. If you have Asthma..stay away from Motrin. Plenty of Ice Packs to the area, on & off. Have food on the stomach before taking the Motrin. The ER doesn't cast you that Im aware of. They tell you to follow up with an Orthopedic Dr.
