So you are asking the internet if your Dr. Is right? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he knows the type and degree of fracture and since he is a Dr, knows best. But if you aren't convinced I would get a second opinion, but from a orthopedic, not the Internet.

How active are you? My ortho asked me about my job and other activities then put me in a hard cast vs. a boot.

Excuse me gentlemen, I'll handle this!

Redbear, a few questions before my diagnosis:

1. Are you chubby?
2. Who's your driver?
3. What kind of beer do you drink?
4. Do you have a pic?

the thing is when i was at the ER last night, the only one that saw me was the nurse, the xray tech popped his head in and said it was "chipped" but with the release papers, it said fractured ankle. i would have thought with any breaks or fractures they would have put you in a hard cast.

From one who has "been there, done that," there are different levels of fractures! If they mentioned "chipped" you probably did like I did and a little chip of bone pulled away with the ligaments when you twisted it. If I remember correctly, they call it occlusion, or something like that. I had chips on both the inside and outside of the ankle.

The ER put a temporary cast on me with instructions to follow up with an ortho doctor. She looked at the X-Rays and said I didn't really need the plaster cast. She put me in a "boot." No weight on the foot for 2 weeks, then I could walk in the boot only. I had to wear that d*$n shoe for 6 weeks!!! Listen to your doctor! They know what they are talking about!! Hope you get better soon!!!

The ER doesn't cast you that Im aware of. They tell you to follow up with an Orthopedic Dr.

I'm not a doctor, but I've broken no less than 17 bones and have had orthopedic surgery 8 times.... So speaking from personal experience I can say that a chip is classified as a fracture, and hardened casts aren't always the solution. The Dr. Knows what he's doing, an ortho might see it different and put a hard cast on it, but chips aren't something that is going to heal by immobilization, it needs rest and time. Good luck!

Again...depending on the type of fracture, you are right. Stay off of it a long as you can, and if you aren't allergic to Motrin (Ibuprophen), you can take 600 mg every 6 hours, or 800 mg, three times a day. If you have Asthma..stay away from Motrin. Plenty of Ice Packs to the area, on & off. Have food on the stomach before taking the Motrin.

Hi Roman! Great advice. I am just healing from an ankle injury. I have not been able to play tennis all summer. Just got back from a cruise though which was soooooooooooo fun! My doctor told me to alternate heat/cold on the injury immediately. It really seemed to make a difference.
