you can get a credit report from each of the 3 agencies once a year for free... i print one report from one agency every january, then i'll switch to another around may and another in october... they all have the same info... no sense in checking just once a year.

Thanks for the link! I went to freecreditreport.com and was kinda pissed it wasn't free at all.

Looks like I'm doing alright! No late payments!

Bump..

I just received two out of three of mine. I decided to order them on myself while helping out my Dad to get his (he's trying to get things in order).

Now, I know there are soft inquiries (which do not affect your credit score), while hard inquiries can. I seem to have a ton of soft inquiries from banks, and I mean every month they get one. They are coded under a promotional code, which means I don't have to know in advance that they're inquiring.

But then they follow it up each month with junk mail offering another credit card. So I'm guessing all I have to do now is request in writing to the credit agency that they stop receiving my information, and the junk mail should go away.

Two problems solved. :yay:

I use BOA's credit monitoring service. I've never noticed a soft inquiry on my report before. I just pulled from the 3 bureaus using www.annualcreditreport.com and saw dozens of soft hits - ranging from banks to Fingerhut.

If what you say is true, that I can just write them a letter and they will remove me from their lists, I'll be busy the next few days.

It's been a while so I don't remember the exact procedure. On my Chase Business Card statement, there was either a box to check or a website to go to and it would halt ALL inquiries unless I authorize it. Sort of a "do not call" list. It stopped all the credit card mail offers also.

Looking through one of them, the instructions are all there on how to security freeze a credit report. Fortunately, the written request (certified mail, e-mail, or internet) only has to be to the credit reporting agency (either or all all of the three), and not to all of the Fingerhuts of the world. That could take some time...

A security freeze just means they are prohibited from releasing credit info without express written consent. The downside to this is any time someone needs or wants your credit info (re-fi, etc.) you'd need to write (which would take time).

Personally, I like the security freeze option much better. :yay:

It's that time again, folks! Check your credit report to make sure there's nothing flaky on there!

I would venture to guess a good percentage of people here also have access to free reports/monitoring from Uncle Sam due to the recent security breaches at OPM.

Also, if you are security conscious you should probably file for a 90 day fraud alert quarterly (only takes a couple seconds online) which makes it considerably more difficult for someone to fraudulently open a new credit card, establish utilities, or open a bank account in your name.
