Through middle and high school, my buddy and I would load up on whatever carbs were being served as sides at school. Corn and French bread were many a meal. When we started the Tech Center, we'd stop at Mattingly's and load up on their fried chicken, bbq ribs, or anything else Bernice in the deli whipped up that day. Carbs or protein were all we consumed. Oh, and chocolate eclairs from the bakery. Good times, good times...

Oh they CAN. Actually, my youngest probably WOULD want that, because she likes a lot of our leftovers. My son would eat both, and throw away half of each. What annoys me is, they sell snacks out of the same account, and the ONLY MEANS of stopping my son from ordering two lunches or buying lots of junk - is my pledge to whup his ass if he tries it.

My oldest son's account balance was rising faster than it should be because he was buying two lunches. I told him to stop and he told me that he was buying the extra lunch for other kids who's accounts were negative.

My senior year, I think I lived on french bread when they had it. 3 cents a slice with butter, would get 5 slices.
I was butt poor in college, so we got creative. At the Deli in the Rathskeller, the counter guy wasn't the brightest bulb. They had a price for a sandwich, things like tomato were free, and a slight upcharge to get a roll instead of bread. After a bit of persuasion, we convinced him to make us a tomato and lettuce with mayo on a roll for 25 cents. That lasted for a few weeks until his boss found out.

Can’t blame them there. I can remember complaining about lunch when I was a kid and it was worlds better than the crap they serve these days.
Funny, our high school Facebook page is about 20% on the old lunches and does anyone have the recipes. The top two are the recipe for turkey slop and pizza burgers.

I am so very blessed
Kids aren’t allowed to bring lunches from home anymore?
I make my Boy some delicious lunches, which he heartily eats. I get a kick out of making him tasty things to enjoy. Deli meat roll ups with cheese, pickles and spicy mustard. Homemade chicken noodle soup in a thermos. Turkey sammich with bacon, lettuce & tomato. Hot meatballs in a thermos along with a roll and cheese to make himself a meatball sub. Fresh fruit, fresh veggies with dip, chips and brownies or cookies. 😋

He said that if he were to purchase lunch from the cafeteria, his lunch period would essentially be over before he could eat it.

One year, high school sophomore maybe, I had a lunch so late in the day that there was only one class afterwards. By that time of the day, we were numb to hunger, so we sat in a big circle in the smoking area and smoked. I won't say what, but everyone had a lighter...

One of the ways I got around meals in college was either at Roy's or 7-Eleven - I would LOAD UP on fixin's which were free. One Roy's burger with a pile of pickles on top and a load of onions on the bottom, and I was full. One 7 Eleven hot dog with chili, cheese and anything else that was free, and there would be enough food.

Well, that and Ramen and mac and cheese.

When I see kids in the schools, quite a few look over weight to me. Perhaps some eat more often than others.

I learned frito pies in college. 1 bag of Fritos and as much chili and cheese as you could fit in.

All kids look overweight to me. I found my k-5 class pics and we were skinny. The "fat kid" in my class doesn't look fat next to today's average kid.
I was the "fat kid" and I looked malnourished compared to some of today's youth.

That's especially a problem when the cafeteria runs out of food and has to wait for more to be delivered from the off-site kitchen. Or, when the Administrator covering the lunch doesn't feel like doing it because he has other things to do (catch up on his fantasy sports teams, go out for a Nooner, take a nap, play Solitaire on his computer, stuff like that) so he sends the kids back to class after 10 or 15 minutes.
