Freighter aground in the Bay

A 300 foot freighter has run aground off of Tilghman's Island. Coast Guard Oxford is on scene with a couple of tugs and they are pushing and pulling trying to get her free. She's kind of in the channel so some of the bigger ships are having to steer clear.

Any chance of a fuel/oil spill?

Not the CG Oxford, but I served 2 years and 8 days on the USS Oxford back in the early 60's. It's now razor blades but it was also one of my best stations in my 20 year career. It was one of those ships along the same lines as the Pueblo and Liberty. Saw the Caribbean, Panama Canal, west coast of South America, then across the Atlantic around South Africa to be stationed off Viet Nam. Sorry, just going over old memories of the good old days.

On the plus side, there's a position now open as a Pilot.

fixed. as soon as the freighter gets to the mouth of the bay, a pilot is sent out to the ship from lynhaven inlet to steer the ship up the bay.

somebody is in deep deep trouble, and its not the paid captain of that ship

There are also Pilot boats that run out of Solomons.

Coast Guard told me there was no danger. Not sure what is in it. Looks like a bulk carrier. She has now pivoted about 160 degrees with the help of the tugs, but the bow is still grounded (and the two tugs are now pushing her).

I suspect she'll have to return to Baltimore for a safety check.

dont the ones that run from solomons take over for the pilot from Virginia beach and take the ship the rest of the way up into baltimore?

Don't know, just know I see them taking out of Solomons every now and then.. That would make sense. though.. Baltimore is a long way to go from the mouth of the Bay.

Yes, the pilots specilize in sections of the bay, so one does take over when they get close to solomons.......

tugboater, are you a tankerman" (bargeman) ?

Just curious because of the way you worded your post.

He's still out there / 7:00 pm. They managed to turn the vessel around 180 degrees so it is now facing North, but I can't be sure if they have actually freed the bow from the muck or not. There is a police or pilot or coast guard vessel out there sort of watching for other traffic. We'll see if he moves off later (though the next high tide is not until about 2:00 am)

A usually reliable source says it's a 700'er hauling coal. Gauge problems and apparently they couldn't tell the depth. Fishermen are asking for coordinates because it will crate a good fishing area until it fills in again.
