Fresh Chicken Eggs

I have a question. On Rt. 5, around the 234 split, there is an Amish farm that has a huge sign that says "Old Hens."

I guess that means these hens don't lay eggs anymore and you can go get one, kill it and eat it? Is that what it means?

I'm not sure what that sign would mean. Usually the best eating kind from what I read and hear are pullets up to one year olds... after a year or two their muscle (the meat you eat) are too rough and stringy - but they can still lay eggs, so maybe they are advertising for laying hens, but not soo young?

The sign bugs me because I don't know what it means. I should just drive back there, make an ass of myself and ask. :lmao:

Please do that  because that makes no sense to me  Nobody wants to eat old hens or old roosters because they are "tough", it's gotta be for egg laying purposes, is my guess
