Frisbee and the new dog

Rassie LOVES the frisbee. She is great at chasing it and bringing it back. After about the second time, she brings it back, but won't let you have it. No way are you getting it out of her jaws. If you try to take it, you can feel her shaking, then she starts whining. She wants to chase it, but can't give it up. I've tried treats. I bought some cheap frisbees today and she'll kind of fall for it if you tempt her with the cheap ones. How do I train her to give it up? She's got the jaws from hell, but wants to play, just is OCD about giving it up.

Your interest is the key..........if you don't care........she won't care!

Mine was the same. I taught mine "drop it". I held her collar and repeated "drop it" in a firm voice. Every time she did finally let it go, I'd give tons of praise and "Now I'll THROW IT!". It didn't take her long to recognize "Drop it and I'll throw it" and know that if she put it down at my feet I'd throw it for her.

Okay, she's 7. When I got her, I handed it to her and she walked down the street with it and wouldn't give it up. I have done the drop it, give it, put it down command. She holds it in her mouth and you can feel her shaking. She WANTS to give it up, but just can't let herself do it. She'll sit at my feet whining for me to throw it while it's in her mouth, but won't give it up. If I just give up, she follows me in the house, but still won't give it up. She may be part Pitt. She has the strongest grip we've ever seen.

If you ever catch her dropping the frisbee, praise her. Make that specific behavior wonderful one. For her retrieving and possessingthe frisbee is self-rewarding. You want to make dropping the frisbee as rewarding as the catching it is.

If you are having trouble convincing her to drop the frisbee, completely ignore her! Don't look at her or give her any kind of attention until she gives up and drops the frisbee. The trick here is to watch out of the corner of your eye what she is doing without giving her the satisfaction of your attention. Once she gets tired of fighting for your attention, she may drop the frisbee and if so, IMMEDIATELY praise her! Make it the best experience of her life and throw it for her. Repeat if she won't let go again. Continue to do this until you can get a couple successive throws and "drop-it"s out of the game.

Btw- How did those treats work for you???

From your description of her, I would guess throwing her and the frisbee at the same time would be out of the question? Just Kidding!!! Good luck! I'm sure she will get the hang of it!

I haven't given her the treats to try to get her to drop the frisbee yet. I will try that tonight. She generally won't drop the thing until she is in the house. We'll see who can outlast who this evening.

Try two frisbees. She's got to drop one to chase the other. Had the same problem with my dog and tennis balls. She got the message that I wasn't going to throw it again until she dropped it. Eventually she dropped it in front of me automatically after she fetched it.

:yay: I did buy another frisbee yesterday and that seemed to work the first few times, but she caught on to it. Tonight I will use both frisbees and treats and will have more time to work with her.

Lily never caught onto frisbees, but the universal praise approach applies - if and when she drops the ball, I would use your desigated word for "drop" and praise, praise, praise - "OH RASSIE, WHAT A GOOD DROP THAT WAS - GOOD DROP, GOOD DROP, WHAT A GOOD DROP RASSIE!" And I did have to pry Lily's mouth apart, I think, in the beginning to get the ball/toy - but she showed interest as a pup.

Good luck - and I'm so glad you're happy!
