This is an older pic..before the rig was repainted. But it shows the scooter tray detail pretty well.

Strung Out
Good question....I haven't seen him move them. I'll ask.

Here's the context;

Having decided a LDT simply ain't big enough and that the arguments for a MDT pretty much lead to a HDT, the question becomes what of the deck? I don't want a smart car and I want a jeep to be readily available for scouting; ie, towed; not some sort of angled config on the truck (as they are too long to go sideways as per the smart cars).

Next, an HDT is big enough to make it a stand alone over night RV so, it would be great to take bikes along which leads to your buddies trays which leads to the choices; that or some sort of on deck deal, like they are mounting smart cars. Obviously, that would seem to be much more involved, off and on, than your buddies side car deal.

So, fleshing this out as I type, his trays seem great with only windshield height to worry about and the 'big' bikes could be in the 5th wheel garage with dirt or dual purpose in the side saddles for easy access.

AND THEN, some sort of deck above them for storage or even another bike or two; just not a readily accessible one(s).

My last hang up (for now) is that it would be great to also have stake sides for the HDT that are stored during towing and can be added on to make a quasi pick up truck for whatever when the trailer is set up.

:popcorn:

This pic gives you an idea of how the deck is set up....

I bowl overhand
I'll see if I can dig up some pics, but here's an option that one of my wheeling/offroad buddies put together.

1. Bought a 2000-something Volvo extended sleeper tractor, loaded. Added some more RV type stuff to the sleeper cab (flat screen, computer table, microwave, etc). Removed the forward of the two rear axles and had a custom extended driveshaft and carrier bearing made. Built a low motorcycle carrying platform for each side of the truck, that extends from the rear wheel to the back of the cab. They swing outwards and have a flip down ramp for loading and unloading the scooters (he has a pair of Triumph sport bikes). So when he's underway, the bikes are tucked neatly behind the cab on each side. Truck is tagged and titled as an RV (although not by Maryland..some state out west will do that for ya).

2. Triple-axle 30-something foot enclosed trailer rides behind the Volvo. Plenty of room for his early Bronco, tools and tons of "other" stuff as well. Or sometimes he carries two early Broncos in it.

Found some pics. In the one, he's hauling his wedge instead. You can see a large storage box "riding" on one of his motorcycle trays. The other pic has his enclosed trailer behind. I forgot to mention..he custom fabbed a hard-framed awning assembly for that trailer that covers as much ground as the trailer itself and has flaps or whatever to completely close it in as a weatherproof area.
At that Point I think it would be cheaper to pay somebody to take your stuff to your destination for you, and stay in an Embassy Suite every night.

You would understand better why that is not the case if you saw all the stuff we carry and where we end up going with it. Places like Tellico and Moab are pretty remote. You also probably over estimate the total cost of the rig and trailers...FAR less than even a used Class A motor home.

In my case, we travel to the same places a little lighter:

F-450 Aerotow dually pulling a 32' 20K flatbed trailer with hydraulic dove tail (carries two trail trucks and lots of other "stuff") and an '89 F-250 4x4, service body on back, towing a 24' Toy hauler RV (with two quads inside).
