I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for fun cheap things to do with the kids over the summer. My kids are 4 and 2. I live in Charles County, don't want to drive to far. Thanks for any ideas.

rollerskating, hard bargain farm near accokeek, the library sometimes has kids things - reading stories, college of somd has some weekly camps you could sign them up for with diff. topics, family fun place, parks, pool, river, the new trail from Indian Head to White Plains is open to ride bikes or walk, or course there's always Chuck E Cheese or McD's and Chik-fil-a play places, My Gym is good for kids that age too.

Hard Bargain only does school events unless it is a special spring festival or something. You can't just go and check it out. I tried.

2 & 4? Anything you do can be an adventure. At that age, my kids were still taking naps, so I kept my outings under a few hours. Kids that age are not usually able to handle activities more than a couple of hours before they begin to get cranky, tired, hungry, etc.

Someone already mentioned parks & recs and the library. Both of those probably have really fun things for that age group. When mine were that age, I didn't pay for any organized activities, we just did a lot of backyard things or went to a park, playgrounds, the library, etc. The fishing & crabbing is a great idea - kids love that kind of thing! And you can bring a picnic lunch, blanket to lay on if they get tired, etc.

get a pack of ballons, blow a few up and let the kids bounce them around
A couple of empty cardboard boxes will occupy them for hours
Blow bubbles and let them chase them
wading pool on the back porch

Go to Target, buy a think of bubbles. They even make the 4000 bubbles a minute automatic bubble maker.

What kid doesn't love blowing bubbles. Keeps them occupied for hours.

SPRINKLER. That has to be one of my fondest memories of childhood. I still think about it whenever I see them going, and man, did it feel great on a hot day!

gather some sand at a beach and color with food coloring, let dry. Save some jars and have kids fill (use newspaper underneath or do outside) and use straws or other items to push sand to make designs, put in windowsills or shelves for a while to look at and oh and ahh over.

Water gun fight always fun.
make and decorate cookies.
Look on internet for the dough recipe to make ornaments or creatures.
collect flowers/leaves and such. Put between wax paper and iron (this is from a site on web) This is how I saved my leaves as a kid. I think it was the only time I enjoyed ironing.

Choose thin leaves with a low moisture content, that haven’t begun to curl.

Sandwich your leaves between 2 sheets of waxed paper.

Cover your ironing board with an old cloth rag, so you don’t get wax on the board.

Place the sandwich on top of the rag.

Place another old cloth rag on top of the sandwich.

Heat the iron to high, but NO STEAM.

Slowly run the iron back and forth over the cloth rag. Don't press too hard to begin with, or the leaves will shift. Once the paper has begun to seal, use the full weight of the iron and hold it for about 4-5 seconds on each spot.

Lift the rag to see if the waxed paper as melted and sealed. The leaves will be much clearer when the wax has melted.

Allow the sandwich to cool, then cut out individual leaves. Leave a small margin around the leaves so the waxed paper stays sealed.
These leaves will last for months.

Decorating Ideas:

Wax pressed leaves are nice for kids to play with and make collages or those things that hang.

Pin the individual leaves to curtains or hot glue to lamp shades for seasonal color.

Calvert Cliffs State Park

Beware that the slides are steel and get really hot in the middle of a summer day. I suggest going later in the afternoon when its cooled off. Also you can do some hiking there although for 4 and 2 it might be too long to go the full trail.

Yall are no help. :duh:

MRCA, here's some ideas

  • Duct tape them to a wall
  • Give them a BB gun and bet them an icecream they can't break neighbors windows
  • Give them paint and tell them the neighbor wants a new color on their car
  • Have them put the cat in the microwave and watch what happens
  • Give them knives and see which one can hit the apple on your head

You forgot about letting them play in traffic.

Let them run across 235 during rush hour.
