Furniture refinishing -- I.D. this stuff please

crabcake

But wait, there's more...
Any idea what the green stuff is on this table I'm refinishing? It's a copper-green sort of color and it's in several little cracks/crevices/holes in the table. Anyone know what it might be? I don't think it's paint, as it's only in those holes/cracks and stuff and there are no signs anywhere else on the table (i.e., underneath) that would lead me to think this table was ever painted; just stained/poly'd.

TIA

It looks like paint. Maybe it was painted (over scratches and dings) then stripped and stained, before you got it.

That's what Huntr thought too, but like I said, there are no signs anywhere else that it was ever painted (i.e, leg joints, underneath, etc.). If it had, I'd imagine there'd be some paint still in the cracks where the legs meet the table top. :ohwell:

Is it possible that it's some sort of wood filler? Considering it's only around cracks/holes, I could see that being possible since you usually smear just a bit of it around to level out the hole.

Does it have a drawer that looks like that, you could maybe take to someone who refinishes furniture?

Looks like old paint not fully stripped/cleaned out. That's from my experience and from many years of watching my Dad doing the refinish work.

It was shot with a shotgun with copper shot. It stained the wood.

or maybe it's something else.

Any chance a copper planter or something of that sort was at one time on the item you are refinishing. I am in no way sure, but it might be a leaching effect from something like that.

Doesn't wood get marked somewhere along the way in processing it or using it to build something, with a 'serial type' number, possibly a part number, in (IMO) uusually red or green? Could that be what it is? The inks used are usually 'seeped' pretty deeply into the grain of the wood.

ok-didn't finish my thought. Kind of what is left over after it's been refinished and sanded down maybe?

Looks like copper stains ? Try a few drops of muriatic acid .
If it is copper stains it should fizz up and pull the stains up.
It' will not hurt the wood if you wash it with water after your through.
If it works let wood dry, then belt sand.
Muriatic acid can be found at any hardware store for about $3.00 a quart.

PS wear gloves and use in well ventilated area and wear cloths you don't like while using.

It almost looks as though someone put putty/spackle in the cracks/crevis' to make a smooth surface, does it not? At least, that's what the picture shows IMO.

Perhaps it sat outside, under a copper roof, and water running off the roof dripped on it, and got under the finish thru the dents, and left behind microscopic amounts of copper after it evaporated?

That's what I was thinking, too ... a wood filler/putty of some sort. I dunno ... I'll ask B to get the Muriatic acid ... he may have some in his work truck for something. I'm too chicken to play with any form of 'acid'. :skeered:
