Hey, whatever.... If you are in a shady biz, so be it... As a biz owner I share the same ethics as David....

Why do so many people do that kind of stupid on the internet?..what leads them leap to wild assumptions about others based on almost nothing? You know less than nothing about a)me b)my internationally known business or even what that business is. Makes you look..small, at the least :dingding:

I did learn one thing usefull in this tread though; Won't bother taking the melted silver or gold we're fishing out of the old house rubble to G&H..:nomoney:

You are the one that said you have clients cussing from the lowballing, not me...

No..my clients all - nearly 100% of them - are in the business of lowballing ME. The South Koreans, for example, are veritable sharks. But the Germans are no slouches in that department either...and then you really want to get down and dirty with negotiating 'tactics', try doing business with the Chinese and the Indians.

It's a "jungle out there".

I know someone who buys unwanted gold and won't rip you off!I sold him several things and a lot of other people have as well.Awhile back I took some of my unwanted gold to I think JW Jewelers by Giant in Prince Frederick and the amount they wanted to give me wasn't even half of what Billy paid me for it. Contact Billy Peacock fb search him or pm me for his phone number.

Why would making a lowball offer mean that someone is dishonest? I thought that's how haggling works. If I'm selling an item worth $50, the buyer might offer 20. I say, no, it's gotta be worth 100 at least! And eventually, we'll work our way to the middle - somewhere around the $50 it's actually worth.

If I accept the $20 offer, that means I didn't do my homework and have no clue what it's worth. And with the amount of info available on the internet today, there's no excuse for that.

I think the OP did the right thing. They did their homework and knew they could get a better price elsewhere, and didn't accept the lowball offer. Good on them, and if G&H actually wanted that gold they'd have raised their offer.

Something to consider is the overhead cost of a brick and mortar jewelry shop as opposed to an internet based business which may be run out of someones basement or garage. Have had both and can tell you there is a HUGE difference in the cost of doing business.
I am not familiar with the shop mentioned other than what I have read on this thread. Someone's comment about feeling like they were bothering them with a low dollar sale carries more weight with me regarding whether I would want to do business with them; than the OP who was looking to sell them gold and was dissatisfied with what they offered. I am glad the OP got what they wanted in the end.
Personally, I LOVE Maerten's Fine Jewelry in Lusby- always friendly and never pushy. They will always have my business as long as I live in southern MD. Heather is an incredible designer and donates to many animal rescue events and groups. And then some.

Thinking about this some more - There are situations where a bit of haggling is to be expected, and I still see nothing dishonest about low bids or high asking price. Used car dealer, maybe. As a customer, you know going in that you should be making a deal, not just paying the asking price. At the very least you should be asking for some extra warranty, floor mats or something if you aren't going to lower the price.

But there are other situations where there is still a moral obligation not to gouge the customer. There's a difference between profit & gouging. If you see prices go up on fuel, supplies, etc. right before a hurricane, that's gouging.

But I'll stand by my statement above for the OPs situation. Both the OP and G&H knew that the seller had other options; G&H couldn't force them to accept the low price. Nothing dishonest there; the offer simply wasn't high enough and the seller moved on.

They are also in the business of selling jewelry. It sounds like they aren't too interested in the buying old jewelry business, so they are not trying to win that business unless they can make enough from it.

The statement that they won't get a better offer is probably accurate if they were referring to other jewelry stores who run on similar overhead. Once you throw the internet market into it you can throw out any comparison.

The company they eventually sold their gold to is in the business of buying the old stuff and reselling the raw material. They probably do enough quantity to make their higher price make sense.

It's like selling your vehicle to a dealer vs. selling it yourself. You never get a good price, but is that dishonest?

Is this cash for gold online place legit?? I sold some of my old jewelry at one of those home parties last year and made a great profit, I have some other old earrings and little things to get rid of but would be afraid to mail it away-and maybe never see it again and not receive any money either?

Could be worse OP

I took a bunch of old gold in there and didn't realize until I go home and relooked at my receipt that he paid me 14K prices for 18K and 24K pieces!

Won't make that mistake twice.

:yeahthat: Basic business 101. WTF would buy something for $800.00 and expect to sell it for $800.00? That prime real estate where G&H is ain't cheap!

And obviously when you deal with a business, the old addage is the same as stock- buy low, sell high.

After reading alot about selling gold, I came the conclusion that gold buyers pay more vs jewelers. I was leary about sending my stuff in the mail since I am not there to observe what they do. I looked online to see what alternatives there were in SoMd. There is Gold Buyers of America located in the Annapolis mall (not to be confused with Gold Rush, little Kiosk in the middle of the mall). I stopped by there and the woman working did everything right in front of me, including testing for different Karats of gold. She gave me the price of what I would be paid and if I agreed, she would finish the verification of gold process. Honestly, I got double what I expected to receive and was much more comfortable having the option of taking my stuff and leaving if I wasn't happy. Their website has a coupon for an extra 10% payment (which I forgot! dangit!). Btw, she also had some gold plated stuff to show me how they tell what is legit and what is not.
