garden dirt

Lookin for Margaritaville
Hi everyone !

I would like to add one or two raised beds to my yard this year for some cool season veggies and was wondering where everyone buys their dirt ? I can't afford anything expensive but also don't want to buy just " fill " dirt , if its halfway decent soil I can amend it with what I have here ... just wondered if there is anywhere in the area who sells good dirt, maybe a truck load ? , at a good price . Thanks in advance.

We already make our own compost and have access to all the horse manure we need but I was looking for an inexpensive source of garden soil ... buying it by the bag at Lowes or WalMart gets pretty pricey every time I want to expand my garden and a raised bed needs lots of soil to fill up if I don't want to use the existing soil . Now if only spring would get here ...

The only place I'm aware of is the Greenery.

Used to have one that I grew all my garden plants from seed. Had a lid for it with glass from an old sliding door. Got the bag dirt and manure from Lowes, but it just got to be so expensive with buying the dirt and seed every year, I stopped doing it. I buy my plants from Zimmermans now at about half the cost. Granted, I can't buy all the different kinds that I can grow from seed, but it's enough.

I love the Greenery and they are right around the corner from me but they are a bit pricey, I may still go by and get a couple of buckets of their mix anyways ... I would love to have a greenhouse one day ... when and if I ever retire ... I am recuperating from cancer surgery and will be on disability for a few months unfortunately and gardening is going to be part of my rehabilitation to get my strength and mobility back in my arms . I have been starting most of my flowers and veggies from seeds the past couple of years but I love going to Zimmermanns, Stouffers and Green Acres to see what they have and always buy a few things from them ( They have wonderful greenhouses) :) Before my surgery I did some wintersowing , has anyone around here tried it before ? I did it 2 years ago with minimal success , hoping for more seedlings this year .

Thanks Toppick, I found a container recipe on Garden Web last year, it was pretty good but would be interested in yours, I want to do a few more containers this year with better success .
