I bought a gas grill for the first time.

What is the deal with those canister exchange programs? You drop off your brand-new canister in exchange for some paint-chipped, rust-encrusted, slack-jaw carried by the hardware tank in the cage? Are these safe?

Also, any tips to pass along? For instance, one forum I use the guys are crazy about the Montreal seasoning blend for steaks. TYIA.

:yay: Montreal seasoning....we love it. I cook almost everything on our gas grill. Key is getting it hot, then sear the meat and move it to the top rack or move it to one side and turn of that burner (for london broils, tenderloins, etc.). I do the same with burgers. Steaks, just turn once.

If you want to trade in your brand new empty tank, bring it to my house and I'll trade you one of my slightly rusty but full tanks for it. The exchange program is only good if you don't have the time to take your tank and have it re-filled. BJ's has the best price. One suggestion. Go to a place that fills tanks and grab one of the busted tanks that they have stacked like cordwood around the gas tank and then "exchange" it for a full tank at the gas station. The exchange company won't care because they inspect and repair the tanks every time anyway. Most likely there is just some trash in the valve preventing it from filling, which is easily fixed. Always keep an extra tank of gas on hand.

:yeahthat: McCormicks makes it. Great stuff. Gas fill in Lexington Park at Taylor Gas, if you want to keep your new bottle.

Love, love, LOVE it. :yum: There's also a Montreal chicken seasoning that is dynamite. You can get both at BJ's.

We used the exchange at Sheetz on the end of Great Mills and actually received two tanks that were in better condition than the ones we traded. Sheetz didn't even care that the tanks could not be refilled. :cheers:
You were lucky, there is usually a big charge to upgrade the tanks to the new style. BJ's is hard to beat pricewise.

What are you guys using to catch the grease? It came with this cup holder looking thing that looks flimsy to me. Should I rig up a hanging jar or something? I still have my safety wire pliers and a few spools.

to tell if tanks are the new type (exchangeable) look at the handle. If its a 3 pointed start or triangle its good. If its not its the old type (no pressure release valve i think) and it technically can't be exchanged. But you can usually take it to a gas station and exchange it anyway becasue the people working there don't care. Snead's in lusby refills, as does suburban, and a few other places- refills are definately cheaper.

For seasoning i like a teriyaki marinade, easy to make:
2 cups soy sauce
3/4 cup sugar
couple cloves of garlic chopped
fresh ginger ground or chopped (they have it in the grocery in produce)

just heat the mixture until the sugar disolves and let cool.
then marinade for up to 2 hours.
Good on chicken, burgers, steaks or fish

ummmmmmmmmmmm
Oh, and you can use the left over marinade as a sauce if you boil it and add some corn starch to thicken it up.

I use all sorts of seasonings whenever I make anything. If it's in my cabinet, it goes on my steak, chicken, pork, pasta...anything. :biggrin:

Watch out for the newer Acme valves on your grill tank, they close off if you open them too fast. Gotta take it sloooooooooow or your grill won't get a flame going worth a poo.

You can refill the new tanks at NAS Pax. next to the drill hall. the people at the auto hobby shop will do it for you.
