How do you feel about the topic.

As we know there has been alot of discussion lately about the topic.

I personnally feel like if they can perform the mission regardless of their sexual preferences well then no bother. I dont think it would matter if the person to the left of you is gay or not as long as he can keep you alive in war-time.

NOT Politically Correct!!
If they want to serve, let them...

They're in the military now anyway so whats the big deal, and IMO they are soldiers and sailors period. Not straight or gay soldiers or sailors...

...unless you happen to be in the showers. Then you wouldn't want an openly queer buddy in there with you alone.

Why? Do you think gay guys are such horndogs that they wouldn't be able to restrain themselves?

Anyway, I think whatever the Pentagon thinks, since it's their bag and they know better than me about any problems gays in the military might cause.

Remember the thread with the link to the gay pride parade? I don't wanna be near those freaks. Much less in a shower with em. :killingme

I just retired from the military and I think the current policy "Don't ask, don't tell" is our best option right now. It's not that the military doesn't want them to be gays but its actually there (the policy) to protect them. The military is from the segment of the population and unfortunately, no matter how hard we screen the recruits, we still get some bad apples. There are soldiers out there who would try to inflict harm on other soldiers because of their sexual preference, religious belief or ethnic background.

Becuase they're men.

Picture a hetero guy in the shower alone with a woman. What do you think is on his mind?

Picture a homo guy in the shower alone with a man. What do you think is on his mind?

Or do you think homosexual men have any better restraint than heterosexual men? They're pigs like the rest of us. In fact, about the only difference between gay and straight men I can think of (other than the fact that they choose hairy asses over sleek curves) is their fashion sense.

I don't believe that.

 I was half joking around by that.... half not.

I will submit to you that even if a hideous slobbering wilderbeast of a woman stepped into an open shower with them, there's not a (straight) guy alive that wouldn't check it out, and imagine something... even if only for a second and even if they felt all dirty and nasty afterwards.

I can speak from my own experience. After three months at sea, I got a chance to visit the USS Acadia, which had women onboard.

You'd be surprised at the attention these women were getting, yet they were women who wouldn't have gotten a second glance when we were back in San Diego.

Have you ever heard the term "any port in a storm?"

Yes, but I also think gays have always been in the service just not widely talked about. My Dad was in the Navy for over 20 years and I would hear him say sometimes he thought so and so was a "queer". Stories of rape and/or sodomy don't seem to be running rampant.

That's right. There was a long standing DADT tradition long before it became official policy. Most people knew who was, and they were generally left alone. But there was also the occasional guy that crossed the line, and his life could be in danger.

The policy seems anti-gay to some, but as PJumper pointed out it is for their protection. There are people in the military who will beat or even kill gays. At least DADT acknowledges that they exist, and allows them to serve.
