German Shepherd?

Sonsie

The mighty Al-Sonsie!
Sonsie, I just want to thank you for spelling shepherd properly. :huggy:

I've been looking at the breed websites for a while now, it sunk in. Spelling in general is one of those things I always try to get right. Too many years of writing and reviewing legal documents have made me a little anal about it.

Nothing wrong with anal............

We have a GSD - BEST damn dog I have EVER owned. She is extremely intelligent and very well mannered.

You must socialize the dog with other people and animals from day one!

Also, invest in a really good vacuum cleaner (Dyson) and start with a grooming comb after they loose the puppy fur!

Applejacks is a good place to buy! Local AND they are guaranteed...

A tip from my father-in-law (ex-K9 and bird dog owner), when you pick the puppy, get down on the ground and squeeze it's paw (not enough to make it yelp, but firm) - if it goes to bite (bite hard in defense) choose another. A dog with a good demeanor will not defensively go and take your hand off! Good for any dog :yay:

I already have a good vacuum, with two cats and my own long hair everywhere there is no end to the mess. I'm make sure to socialize the puppy well. We have friends already there with slightly older kids, dogs, cats, and even many parrots so he can get used to another happy chaotic house as well.

I'd love to buy locally but unfortunately I have to wait until we get settled in out west. I can't even imagine driving for 3 days with 2 small kids, two yowling cats, and a possibly leaky new puppy! It's gonna be bad enough as it is. Then we would have to kennel it until our furniture is delivered and we move into the new place too. My cats are used to being drug all over the world with me, I wouldn't want to do that to a puppy though.

Start researching local breeders at your destination.

You cannot go wrong with a GSD... my boy was 1 when we got ours, she is the protector of the boy and does not let him out of her sight.

I will be reduced to tears when she goes, I don't even want to think about it...

Good luck!!! :buddies:

GSD's are wonderful! I rescued one from tri-county earlier this year, she was 12 weeks at the time, and she's just been an incredible dog! She's a huge difference from the beagles and bassets I'm used to, but we've come to an understanding nowadays, and she's an incredibly happy dog. Make sure you have the space for them!

My GSD loves being outside, even in the rain and snow. We have to convince re: bribe) her to come inside sometimes because she enjoys running around so much, and she's got a ton of energy, but I've never seen a dog as dedicated as she is! At night, she is by my side, every night!

I tried to have her sleep with the other dogs, but after a few months she decided that wasn't for her and made her displeasure known. Now she sleeps next to my bed, and my other dogs sleep under my bed (wouldn't want them to feel left out!)
