Giant Mosquitoes

I've been told they are mosquito eaters...........

We always called them 'skeeter eaters' but in fact crane flies mature to reproduce and then they die. They don't eat anything. ('cause google told me so).

I've heard them called "skeeter hawks", they eat the small ones, great to have around even though they look scary.
I have been told that what looks like very large mosquitoes are actually mosquito eaters. Depending upon the size, the asian mosquitoes, which are normally a little larger than our domestic mosquitoes have been known to feed during the day as well.
Last year in Ridge we had billions of what the experts called "Midges" They looked like mosquitoes but were otherwise harmless. However, they have been known to get in your eyes, throat and nose because of the intense concentration of these insects. If you walked near the woods you could hear the hum of the insects. It sounded like something out of a movie. After a month or so they died down. I think the birds had plenty of food from these things. I don't ever recall the Midges being around here. However, when I talked to some other folks, they have heard of them before. Last year was my first experience with them. And hopefully my last. Your best protection against mosquitoes is plenty of bird houses, as well as bat houses. Bats and birds will eat a great deal of them and well worth making a few houses for these important animals. Movies have been known to give bats a bad name. They are actually excellent at eating a wide range of bugs, including mosquitoes. Don't leave any standing water. Just a few ounces is plenty of water for mosquitoes to breed. Good luck!

About a month ago the weatherman had said that mosquitoes will be much larger this year because of so much early warm weather? As well as many more to fight off. I dunno but sure I hope not.
I'm surrounded by pines and its bad enough on a regular season level. Plus my neighbors have no sense of shame... hence no pride, so winter sleds (the round ones) and many other items are sitting full of water all summer in their yards. Top of the line breeding grounds. *shakes head in disbelief*

If it looks like a mosquito.... It's a mosquito. They have been aropund for years and are not some mutated new insect. Relax and grab a large fly swatter and you'll be fine.

Unfortunately, bird and bats don't do much to control mosquitoes as there are much bigger insects for them to feed on. Expect a bad season of mosquitoes due to no winter and no hard freezes. Several species have over-wintered very nicely, are are already active. The asian tiger mosquitoes will not be active for another month or two....dump water as you find it! Midge, very bad year last year, there were not measured by numbers, but by inches deap....not sure what this year will bring. One helpful tip, change your outside lights to yellow, they are less attractive to insects.

I've seen plenty of the nests along rural roads in the Ridge and Dameron area. However, I never noticed a worm, or anything else in the nests. Just nests which looks like a spider web with nothing in it. There was probably over a hundred nests on one road. A bright green worm is unusual. Normally nature would try to have a worm blend in to keep from being eaten by a bird. I guess in this case a bird would need a pair of sunglasses before he eats the worm! Maybe it's a St. Patrick's Day worm?
