Giving Birth -- Calvert or AAMC?

I really want to thank all of you who took time to replay and share your stories. Your comments and feedback have helped me make a difficult decision. After considering what all of you had to say, I did decided to switch to AAMC and was accepted as a transfer patient by Annapolis OB/GYN.

I was happy to hear about all the healthy births at Calvert and most likely would have been fine delivering there. However, I did received some PM from people who had unexpected complications and had to be transfered to Children's. Considering my location to AAMC, I figured it was best to make the switch. Thanks again to all of you.

***Special congratulations to Softball Crazy and Calvert Newbie. All the best to both of you. ***

Thanks

Congrats to you too. May you have a wonderful birth experience. God Bless.

I also live in Calvert & chose to go up to AAMC (I'm now due in 1.5 wks, March 3rd!). Like you, I'm fairly new to the area. I've lived in NY & DC, where most hospitals have what you need right there. I had started a thread a while back, asking for opinions. Many people had great things to say about CMH but I got a few PMs that made me want to check out AAMC as well. We checked out both hospitals & we decided to make the drive up to Annapolis because they have a NICU & Calvert does not. You hope to never need it but you just never know. They won't deliver in Calvert if you go into labor before the 36 week mark. So I didn't feel comfortable going somewhere for all my prenatal care to possibly be sent away if the baby decided he wanted to come a month early.

I've been going up to Annapolis OB/GYN (at the hospital) for all my prenatal care & they've been amazing. Not once have I had to wait to be seen, they always get me right in at my scheduled time. The staff is wonderful. I'm about to be a first time Mom so I've had questions & concerns along the way & they've always returned calls quickly, never made me feel like a burden. We took the birthing class/hospital tour a few weeks ago and were very impressed with the facility.

Good luck with your decision & with the birth!

Thanks so much! Although I feel like I've been pregnant forever, I still can't believe the due date is a week from tomorrow. I'm so anxious to meet our little man. :yahoo:

One piece of advice for your appts. Arrive a little early to get parking. The Wayson Pavillion garage can be a little crowded at times but I usually just park on the top level and take the elevator down to the bottom. I try to get there 15 minutes early to give myself time to get through the garage and walk to the Wayson Pavillion (short walk but slow elevators). I learned that after I was 10 minutes late to my very first appt.

I know it was a tough decision for you to switch hospitals this far along. I wish you the best!

FYI to you ladies - They have valet parking free of charge @ AAMC. If you come in through the ER entrance, make a left to get to the 'pavillions' and the valet stand is on the right.

My cousin just gave birth at AAMC and it was wonderful. She had her own huge, private room. The security is very tight, and they have certain guidelines so nobody can leave out of there with the baby. The baby stays in the room with you, instead of going away during the night and it's just a wonderful facility. It's very clean and my cousin had to have an emergency c-section and everything was very well coordinated.

Plus, the cafeteria is huge and they have like.. hundreds of choices. That was our favorite part.

Just curious- is there a reason you want/need a hospital birth?

and Im with you on the where if there is a reason to go to the hospital in your case. If not, Im baffled but hey..your choice!

You don't have to buy drugs out on the street, they bring them to you in the hospital.
