GMP Cable......Do you think they suck?

watercolor

yeah yeah
I will agree they suck. But then again, I dunno what to say. Cause we get our cable for free, our landlords upstairs pay for it. Our tv sucks when watching though. Cause of the fuzziness...UGH! Its annoying.

Going back to the cable thing...when we moved into our new home GMP told us it would take them 4-6 weeks to get cable out to our house - even though our next door neighbor (who lives about 25 feet from us) had cable. We decided it was time for a dish. A friend of ours gave us a "coupon" that he got when he got his dish. We got free installation and 3 free months. We got three receivers and America's top 100 channels. We are paying $53/month. That's a little more than digital cable, but we have three receivers. The picture is amazing and it's only gone out for a couple of minutes during the lightening storms that we had a month or so ago.

I highly recommend Dish Network.

Oh, when GMP told us it would take 4-6 weeks to get cable we told them to forget about it. And wouldn't ya know, 6 weeks later we found orange paint in our yard where they were marking the lines. What even beats that is, we called GMP to see if they were marking lines for cable and they told us no. We called mis-utilities and they told us it WAS GMP.

When I had Western Shore/GMP cable (1991-1998), the offerings were pitiful and the service was mediocre. I remember the Super Bowl outages too.

After a while, I stopped watching everything but Simpsons, Seinfeld and Star Trek TNG. (I must like S-shows, and I've been told that I would LOVE the Sopranos. I have not yet seen the show.). The other stuff bored me to tears, except for the occasional movie. Also, I was working up to 50 hours a week, so I wasn't even home to watch TV half the time.

When I moved four years ago, the house did not have cable. The previous owners had PrimeStar. The cable company said it would cost $600 to run the signal down our long driveway. Then PrimeStar was bought out by Dish Network or Direct TV (I don't remember which) and the new outfit said the old receivers wouldn't work on the new system. So I said the hell with it.

Have GMP and DirecTV.

GMP Cable modem service has been fine. No major outages, and with the old Com21 modems, usually unplugging/re-synchronizing would solve the problem within 15 minutes.

Now, with the new Docsis cable modem, I turned in my Com21, bought a Motorola from Amazon and cable modem service is now $80 per month saving the $9.95 rental fee. I use DirecTV for television, but still must have tv service from the cable company (which I rarely use, and don't even have hooked up to all of the TVs in the house.)

The only other high-speed service in the area is DSL, which I use at the office and it works fine too. I'd choose that at home too if I could get it, only to save another $30 per month (not because there is anything wrong with my cable modem service.)

I have never had a billing problem with GMP.

No Comedy Central has been a big complaint of mine for awhile,I even asked somebody at GMP one time and the guy said,"yeah I know,I been trying to tell them the same thing".
About the last 3 or 4 months that I had my cable internet it was down constantly and I reported it three times and it was never fixed.Sometimes unplugging it and plugging back in helped but not all the time, besides, you shouldn't have to keep constantly doing that every time you use it anyway,it shouldn't be down that much. The new system they are switching to may be better but I don't know. One time I got a message from GMP on my machine saying that they did a routine scan and that I had some kind of pop 3 server running and if I didn't stop it they would turn me off,I told them I had no idea what that even was and that I don't have any server going. So,I switched to dialup, much cheaper anyway.

GMP is less than adequate. Only have it for cable tv, but any channel below 14 is likley to have bad "reception" at any time. GMP is unable to address the problem, but if you complain well they might discount your bill a few dollars. Still can't see the picture; unsatisfactory.

Used to have DIRECTV and it was great. Better product for less money than cable. New home on wooded lot, unable to get any reception from the satelite.

Can't speak with any authority on the $5 v$10 ho situation.

They suck whole heartly! I live in the Oakville area, the reception totally sucks. And don't try to call them if there is a problem, they never answer the phone, OR they take the phone off the hook. The last 2 redskins pre season games we either had nothing on our tv screen or it was so fuzzy you could hardly see. One more thing the price you have to pay for this sucky cable, it's cable robbery! The only thing that stops me from going to Direct Tv is, I have all the movie channels for free. I subscribed to them, with the reception being so bad I had them take away the movie channels away. Well they stop billing me, but they never took away the channels. So that little satisfaction is why I stay with this cable company!

Do you think they Suck??

:barf: What's really surprising is that they've been at this/doing this for so long! When I moved into my townhome in 1991, I tried an indoor antenna - because the Homeowners Assn.
would not let us put up an exterior type. No good. Got Western Shores because they're the only cable game in town. The reception varied from station to station.
But what really frosted my arse was that during any thunderstorm, even a little one, I'd lose the service for hours!
God help you if you like to watch the Super Bowl or a major sporting event; not to mention movies on HBO. I went to DirectTv and have been happy ever since. The picture and sound are first rate, and I have 104 channels for $48.00 a month. I can't see how the place stays in business with the service(or lack of) they provide, and for at least 10 years now, too!! Ahh, only in Southern Maryland....................

Hey, what do you get for 48 bucks a month, on Direct Tv? Does that include any movie channels, especially, hbo, and showtime? Thanks!

Do you think they Suck II

There's no contest between cable and satellte TV. What do I get for my $48.00? Seven channels of HBO, Intnl Film Chan, Sundance Channel, Turner Classic Movies, and three channels of ESPN, + TNT, TBS, Discover Channel, educational, Religeous and Health channels. For the ladies, theres Lifetime channel and PAX and one other I cannot recall right now. And you know what? It almost NEVER goes off the air. Dense cloud cover will stop the signal-BUT - once the cloud goes away, your programming comes back- all by itself!!!!
But you do have to watch your wallet- if you go hogwild, you can spend big bucks on what is available for sports and movie package promotions. There's also parental conrtols on the ratings and how much you can spend per month on- did I mention 100 channels of pay-per-view movies? Do you get my drift?

Satellite Internet

Does anyone know how I can get really fast internet in Cedar Cove? The home I am buying is currently hooked up through Dish network but they don't offer internet. I currently have cabel modem and they don't offer it. I need faster than dial up. Does anyone any solutions?

Dancing Up A Storm
do they suck--yes

Jeneisen, looks like the only one that can offer satellite hi-speed is directway.com, an offshoot from Directtv, and maybe the Dish system, but I'm not sure about their services.
Until such times that Sou Maryland warrants more attention, I guess that's it, except for cable modems, and I think you know/heard about those folks.

NET

www.starband.net is a satellite service and the signal comes thru the same dish that dish tv uses and after the startup fee it is only $99 or $69 a month depending on which startup route you pick, the $499 fee with 69/mo is the most economical though they have a package with $199 startup and $99/mo for one yr then $69/mo thereafter for those that can't put out the $499 at first

Football season!
What is REALLY bad about GMP is they will not sell the Cable Modem service without cable service because they say it is impossible.. And extended cable at that. Funny how just 30 miles north the cable company there manages to offer cable modem without cable service. Greedy people..

I have Dish network and love it. But I am also in an area not serviced by DSL, so I'm stuck with a dialup. ugh

I'm kinda' surprised that as big as Cedar Cove is, that there isn't a phone company network office close enough to service those houses with DSL...???

No I looked into it believe me. All I can have is dial up. GMP doesn't offer cable modem down there and neither does DSL. So I am either stuck with satellite or dial up. Thats the only thing I am going to hate being there. Well that and the planes being so loud over the house.

jlabsher

Sorry about that chief.
Dish network is currently in negotiations with Earthlink for Satellite DSL. They are also in merger talks with Direct TV, and one of the selling points of the merger to congress and the FCC is high speed internet access to rural areas. Expect to see high speed available via satellite within a year.
