Is it rude to think that the traditional vacation will be put on hold until both couples have kids?
As someone who has had young children and now has grown ones, I don't think it's rude at all. Larry and I are at the stage in our lives where we don't want to spend our friend-time watching them chase after their squab. We want to do adult things. When the kids were little, we mainly did things with other parents so the kids could keep each other entertained and we were ALL chasing after squabs.

It's a matter of compatibility. Just expect your friends to be offended that you don't want to spend your vacation catering to their offspring - new parents are like that.

dressing up in hen suits, playing Lady & The Tramp with pasta, measuring wrists.....I could go on and on....
Exactly. You can't do those things in front of children.

I'm looking forward to taking care of little ones!
You are in for a surprise if you think all they do is sleep and ride around in a stroller.

Literally, any time you are with people and their small children, they spend the ENTIRE time fussing after this kid in one form or another. Feeding it, comforting it, chastising it - CONSTANTLY. You barely get to visit with them anyway because children are so consuming. It's just the way it is.

I have a priceless video of Larry's sister. She and her husband had friends over and she was videotaping the children playing. The guys were watching a football game and her husband said, "Aw, man - it hate when they do that!", to which his wife gasped and said, "Don't say that in front of the kids!!!" He's like, " Say what?" She replies, "H-A-T-E (spelled out just like that) - don't say that in front of the kids!"

:killingme

Imagine a whole week long "vacation" of that.

 I'm sure ALL of you knew what to expect before you got married & had kids. WTH gave me all this red?!
Okay, I TRIED to hit you back in the green.

It's not that we all knew what to expect, it's that we didn't try and pretend we did to people who knew better. I must admit, when you said "All they do is sleep and ride around in a stroller, right?" I about pissed myself laughing.

Janey, if you REALLY want to be hit in the red, say something like, "When I have kids, they won't act like THAT!"

I haven't gone through the thread yet so this may be covered. I am a parent, but I would say if you don't have kids, kindly say you would like to go it your own till you have kids. You haven't made the choice to have that life altering event yet, so you should still be able to enjoy those days where a vacation is different. Once children are involved, vacations are different - even if they are someone elses. They will probably understand (maybe not at first but they will as they become matured parents).

I can't imagine any parent of a child or more (who has had at least a few years child rearing experience) not understanding.
