Google's New Chrome Browser

Google is famous for minimalism and speed.... Nothing really impresses me (been using Firefox and Safari)...but, being able to have one box to enter URLs or search terms does speed things up...saves a few tabs to get to the right box--or back if I overshoot.

So far - it is OK. I really like FireFox (especially being able to control when I see Flash, etc.). The court is still out on Chrome.

So which one comes out smelling like roses? The beta of Internet Explorer 8, released just last week.

When playing a YouTube video, Firefox 3 took up 95 percent of the CPU time on a three-year old laptop running Windows XP.

Chrome came in at 60 percent -- still too much. Especially since Google owns YouTube! You'd think it could make its browser work well with that site in particular.

Internet Explorer barely broke a sweat, taking up just a few percent.

What is funny (strange - not ha ha) is that lots of non-Microsoft stuff runs much slower on recent MS OSs and yet the actual program is not hogging CPU or memory and System Idle Process is using most CPU.

I have Java code that run 43 times faster on Fedora 8 Linux than on Windows XP.

Makes me wonder if Microsoft isn't doing something to purposely slow down competing products on MS OSs.

Interesting concept. However, I'm sure competitors would have figured that out by now during their own testing and filed anti-trust suits.

The other part of that is that portions of the MS OS are still proprietary, and "outsiders" just can't take best advantage of the code.

Sun did and won. Remember? But the same Java code runs 43 times slower on XP than Linux. That is significant.

Microsoft hasn't had a good OS since DOS 3.3.

I'm not a huge fan of this. It has (at least when I loaded it) all the pull downs on the right side of the screen, when I'm used to them being on the left. Since firefox is what I'm used to and works just fine, I wasn't inclined to try and fix it.

/shrug.

not much of a good program just yet. i mean yea sure after its out of beta it probably would be pretty good. right now its not much security or safety.

Digging up old threads

So, I downloaded the latest version of CCleaner, which I've been using for years, and it came with Google Chrome included. Since I didn't see anywhere to not allow GC, I figured "no way would they microsoft me that way." Wrong.

Now normally, companies that microsoft (auto download with no opt out feature) me really pizz me off, and I immediate stop doing business with them. I also biatch them out, for all the good it does.

But, I figured, what the heck; google's not my favorite, but let's try it out. So far, it seems faster than IE8. It's more bare-bones than IE8, but that's okay. Time will tell if it works for me or not. I suddenly realized that some setting in IE8 is why I haven't had spell check, because it's suddenly back with Chrome.

I have it installed as a back-up browser (burned too many times by an IE crash). Having some fun checking out the add-ons but haven't really used it that often --- mostly because of lack of time to gain familiarity.

IE died for my computer a long time ago. Ive had Google Chrome for a while now. I like it. Only thing I dislike is when trying to view pictures in Hotmail (idk if it does this for yahoo, gmail, etc or not) it must first download them to the browser before you can open them. It takes all of 3 seconds, but it gets annoying when you receive an email like multiple pics.

Where did you d/l it from? I just d/l it from piriform.com, the creator of CCleaner, and the only thing related to Google during install was the Google Toolbar, which you can uncheck to not install the toolbar. It's possible, if you d/l it from a site other than piriform.com, that they may have included Chrome.
