It would seriously have to be happening in the rarefied air above NAVAIR; that's how scrutinized our budgets are throughout the annual cycle. I say "our," but you know what I mean. For 15 years, that's all I dealt with; budgets, contracts, command staffing, O&M,N budgets, and then the move to ERP.

I'm happy to no longer be a part of that mess.

The thing that people do not understand about the Government, or at least the DoD, is that EVERY. FRIGGIN. THING. has a cost associated with it. Your phone, your physical desk, your computer seat....if you can think of it, there's a cost involved. Want to move your desk? Okay, that's usually a decision above your head, but there's a cost to it. It costs money to know where you're sitting and where you're moving. It costs money to move your phone; that is, to turn the one you have now off, and turn the one you're going to on. Oh, did you want to keep your same phone number because half the Fleet, as well as the FSTs have your phone number? You need to justify that in writing and get it approved, and oh-by-the-way, that's an extra cost.

Crap, even 5 years after retiring and a lot of this stuff is fading, I still know way too much about it.

Your CAC is a cost. Need special access to a SCIF? That's another cost. Need to take pictures for events? That needs approval and that's an extra cost. Contractor badges cost money.

And it's all micro-managed to the dollars and yes, even the cents. Especially when you're building a budget in OPOM (O&M,N), which pays for people. Imagine that.

I think the danger of coming in and not having computer access is over, but this is stuff someone should have regardless, but very few do. DoD seems to be doing a decent job of navigating this, they are very predictable which is why I knew exactly how the what did you do email would play out.

Phones not on desks anymore so no cost there. Actually no desks either, just modular cubicles. The current NMCI assets can be used anywhere with an internet connection, either hardwired or WiFi. OPOM is no longer used for O&MN; it's now a cost modeling software application combined with AMS/CSPT for Spend Plans.

Not entirely true, everyone in my dept has a desk phone and a desk. Also have several lab phones for people when they are not at their desks.

So is it easier or harder to use than OPOM? There were things I liked about OPOM, and things I didn't. I never did understand why it was inside an ordnance database, but it made sense to somebody, I guess.

OPOM was originally designed for Ordnance. It included escalations for required items not funded that were not used for O&MN. If year 1 item not funded it can be escalated in priority for year 2 and year 3 so it would get funding. The jury is still out on the replacement apps. Can't say much more with CUI involved.

Kind of feel like if you need to use AI to make your bullets, you're job probably isn't that important....I've been on leave for 3.5 weeks and still have done enough in the last 2 weeks that it took me a whole 5 minutes to come up with my 5 bullets....why do people insist on making things worse?

Some people just aren't writers, I know guys who work on machines that can barely send an email, but it has no bearing on their job performance.
