Ah. So it's not to see what you're doing, it's to see what you're NOT doing, ie checking email and responding to tasks, and weeding out bogus accounts.

Aircraft carrier, they simply dont want to bother giving someone only there for a couple weeks access. Someone has to approve etc. The one time I got NMCI access it was so incredibly slow couldn't even log in before it timed out. The sailor phones couldn't be used to discuss work stuffthe d you have to beg for POTS line access, if you find the right person.
Hasn't that changed with the implementation of SEA2 (Sailor Edge Afloat and Ashore)? They have been installing SpaceX’s Starlink and the UK’s Eutelsat OneWeb to deliver faster speeds since 2022. So far Starlink has been installed on the USS Nimitz, USS Ronald Reagan, USS Abraham Lincoln, and USS Gerald R. Ford.

You only have access if they want you to have access. It's just like accessing a system on land, it takes so long to get access that by the time you have it you are already gone.

When I'm there, almost never a full crew is aboard so the proper sailors may not even be there to give the access. There is a reason I take my own toilet paper.

I have a very hard time believing that, at least in DoD. If they truely want to cut waste give employees a voice in pointing it out. I can't tell you how many times myself and others have tried to point out how wasteful things are only to be told "that's just the way it is, you can't change it".

I agree I dont think its as prevalent in the DOD. Judging by the folks I deal with, which takes me from PMs down to the folks working the hardware. Spent 30 minutes last week going through a warehouse looking for some hardware that apparently never left the UK even though WAWF had a ship date of Dec 2024. That guy was on it. He was just as invested as I was. Most of the wasteful stuff I see is just bad choices made due to budgets.

I'm really interested in the employees that dont have their own computer, these are guys whose work station is a CNC machine, a metal break etc. Last time I saw there is one computer per 20-25 of them.

If you are required to work in a SCIF when on travel and you don't check your e-mail before going in there's a good chance you wouldn't see it until late in the day. Lots of travel starts on a Monday, you may not check e-mail before leaving at 4am to get that 7am flight out of BWI. More than once I was sent to catch a ship in port and I wouldn't have access to a computer or phone that could access my government e-mail for a week or more at a time. That might be a bit better now, but I bet it still happens.
Been more than 25 years since I worked in a SCIF...lot has changed since then, I'm sure.

I find this VERY HARD TO BELIEVE. When an employee at my place of work leaves, it's ASTONISHING how quick they disappear from the systems. Files under their ownership are replaced with a code, for ownership - THE NEXT DAY. They're off all email lists immediately (except for privately made ones - for example, I keep a file with dozens of distribution lists for different projects - I have to PERSONALLY remove them because it's my own file).

I can't believe any agency is so inept they can have fake emails or faux accounts collecting paychecks. Clients - yes. We deal with records of stores, businesses and establishments all the time that disappear. Since we check them once a month or once a year they get marked as such VERY quickly.

But when someone quits, retires, DIES - and I've had two co-workers die just on my current project - their cubicles were gone inside a day.

I can’t say whether they were collecting a paycheck, but I have seen people stay in the system, with both an account and an email account, for months. For a few instances even over a year.

Some managers just aren’t as diligent about recordkeeping as they should be.

UNLESS there never was such a person and someone's fudging the books to funnel money elsewhere.

That's what I'm guessing this is about and I have no doubt there's some of that going on because I've seen it firsthand on a smaller scale. If nobody is checking, the fake employee will never be discovered and the culprit will never be caught. This would explain why dept heads are telling their staff to not respond, and I would like to know exactly who is saying that because last time I looked "State Dept" was Marco Rubio, and it's flat out impossible that he gave that directive.

Person I replaced on a contract 20some years ago kept her email address and had access to time accounting and time cards. For 6 months, she entered a default charge number for 40 hours a week after she left the company. With automatic deposit, she got bi-weekly paychecks for doing nothing. Boss never found out who was approving her timecards but he knew it wasn't him.
