We just got done meeting a three year old Dane we are more than likely going to get. But I wanted to know how much should we expect to spend on his food? Also, what brand of food do you recommend? Thanks!

Congrats great dog. A good friend of mine had one that was technically a harlequin, even though he was 95% black and had a white patch on his throat. Super obedient and super loyal, one of the best dogs i have evre had the pleasure of being around and i was around him a lot. Protective of the people he loved, but super kid friendly and to them he looked like a pony.

I saw one at the vet a few weeks ago, so sweet and gentle. She was huge. She sat on the chair like a person and her feet touched the floor. It was comical. If I had the room, that would be my next dog, but with a GS now, space is limited. Congrats to you.

Thanks! He is a beauty. All black with a white patch on his throat just like you described. He was very lovable. They just had a baby so they can't provide the attention anymore. He got along great with our lab and kids, so I think he will be a good fit. :)

They should tell you what he eats and if it's working or him, best not to change it. As far as how much, I would think they should be able to tell you that also.

No harm here but if you have to ask about how much food is going to cost maybe you should re-visit getting a Great Dane (nickname Heartbreak breed.) Please do your research on owning a Dane if you haven't had owned before.

I've owned 2 Danes so I know of what I speak.

I meant it as so I'm not terribly shocked. I don't want to feed him junky dog food so that's why I asked. We can afford it, no issues there. But thanks for your concern.

She used to work at a vet and recently quit, but she said he eats a prescription food just because it was way better and she could get it for really cheap. So she said we can change it to anything we want. So that's why I was looking for recommendations. We just switched our lab to Blue.

For my dog, I have tried ALL (and I mean all) the expensive stuff, everything she ate seemed to go right through her, finally switched her to Beneful Puppy and not only does she love it, she's doing really well with it.

That's good :) What kind of dog is she? We used to feed him pedigree. Recently he started to shed a lot and had a few balding spots so the vet thought he developed an allergy to the grain (which honestly we didn't know was like us eating McDonalds everyday). He is doing a lot better and his hair has grown back.

She's a white Shepherd, although you can't tell from my av, because she loves mud.

Remington loves the mud as well. Here is a picture of him avoiding looking at me because he's not supposed to be on the couch.

All of my dogs eat Purina One Lamb and Rice, at BJ's I think its 30 dollars for a big bag. Never had any problems at all.

Lamb and Rice - Dry Dog Food - Purina ONE® SMARTBLEND®

my vet describes this dogfood^ as junkfood for dogs. My vet recommends a good food like taste of the wild or evo or one of them as they don't have any fillers i.e corn etc in them like the food dawn listed does. I fed bruno taste of the wild lamb til it was recalled then switched her to earthborn almost same as taste of the wild ingredient wise. I can tell you this when my dog was on this food her coat looked good etc. She is now on prescription food due to having crystals in her urine and she will be on it til she passes away per the vets words as she now sees what happens when she goes off of it for any period of time (the crystals come right back again).

A few years ago, my Vet said that any Purina Product was good for your dog, although, she would like to recommend a Prescription Diet, or a Food that her Hospital endorced. Since then, I did my own research, and found that I prefer a Grain-Free Diet. Corn seems to be at the top of the list where "Fillers" are concerned. Some Dogs are allergic to Corn. Corn is fattening too as it is a Complex Carbohydrate. Like I said in a previous post, how many Wild Dogs back in the day, can be found in a Corn Field eating Corn? Another concern of mine, with the cheaper, Corn-Filled Dog Foods, is the Coloring! Coloring is not for the Dogs, it's a mind game for the Human's eye. Dogs don't care what COLOR their Food is, as long as it tastes good. I have to wonder if feeding a Dog the Colored Food, isn't one of the reasons there are SO MANY Dog Cancers popping up? I fed my now deceased Dog, what ever was on Sale, until the last 3 years of her life. When I switched to Grain-Free, she perked up a LOT, and had the energy she once posessed as a young Pup. By then, I think it was too late, because she did die of Cancer. I will always blame that on the Fillers, and the coloring she ate the first 7 years of her life.

A few years back I switched to Blue Buffalo and it's done wonders for all my dogs, I use the grain free, and yes it's pricey but I can tell you I have NOT one time had to take my dogs to vet for any skin issues, nor digestive problems, and bloat/torsion worried me alot, had not problems there either (knock on wood) - so I figured it's like people, eating healthy will cost you more but in the long run it's worth it - also someone here mentioned Taste of the Wild, I'm sure I'm right on this but check it out to be absolutely sure but TOW is made by Diamond , which has had too many recalls for my liking .

If you read the Feeding Instructions of the Cheaper Foods, you'll see that they require more Cup(s) per feeding. If you look at the Better Brand, the amount is less. You don't need to give them as much, so it costs about the same in the long-run. Both of my Bostons were Itchy Dogs when feeding the Cheaper Brands. That Breed is prone to Skin, and Digestive issues anyway.

its only been recalled 1x...and i suggested that she go with earthborn which is similar to it. if she goes to peppers pet pantry the owner will tell her what will work best as the totw was recalled but have heard they cleaned up there plant and back to making the food again.
