my vet describes this dogfood^ as junkfood for dogs. My vet recommends a good food like taste of the wild or evo or one of them as they don't have any fillers i.e corn etc in them like the food dawn listed does. I fed bruno taste of the wild lamb til it was recalled then switched her to earthborn almost same as taste of the wild ingredient wise. I can tell you this when my dog was on this food her coat looked good etc. She is now on prescription food due to having crystals in her urine and she will be on it til she passes away per the vets words as she now sees what happens when she goes off of it for any period of time (the crystals come right back again).

Quite honestly I dont care what your vet or you say, I think you are a quack and really prefer not to have you post and quote me!

its only been recalled 1x...and i suggested that she go with earthborn which is similar to it. if she goes to peppers pet pantry the owner will tell her what will work best as the totw was recalled but have heard they cleaned up there plant and back to making the food again.

TOTW may have only been recalled once, BUT the plant (diamond) that manufactures it has had several recalls. Read up on it! I will never trust their plant again nor the other lines that they make for other companies.

Thanks everyone for all of your suggestions and insight! We brought "Bo" home today. We have about a months supply of the prescription food, and the vet recommends switching him to Science Diet, so I will have to read up on that so we can start the transition.

In regards to another poster, we recently switched our lab from Pedigree to Blue. We have noticed his coat looks a lot better and he isn't shedding as much. And like someone else said, even though Blue is pricier, we don't have to feed him as much.

Here is a picture of Bo enjoying his new bed/home (the picture doesn't do his size justice though)

Beautiful. Congratulations!
Congratulations on your new Baby! He looks to be in good shape. As far as Science Diet goes, I am sure that it's not a BAD Food, but do your own Reaearch. Vets that recommend that, are the one's selling it. Google the "Best Dog Foods", and you might change your mind. Innova has five stars according to an unbiased Dog Food Rating.

If a dog does well on a particular food, that's great. I have had people bring in dogs that eat food that I consider inferior; that have shiny coats and bright eyes and live long lives. That is cool!
I mostly deal with people that want higher end foods for their dogs and cats; that don't contain preservatives, artificial colorings and a bunch of fillers. Or with people whose dogs and cats don't respond well to grocery store type foods and have shown signs of allergies. We see people with animals with medical issues that have a very limited ingredient tolerance or dogs and cats with diabetes. No one on my staff claims to be a veterinarian or expert on animal nutrition. Fortunately, we do have a vet in Callaway that specialized in animal nutrition and we pick her brain about what is good and bad. She recently walked a customer over to my store and showed her exactly what she needed to buy. She explained to me why she wanted this particular food (EVO canned) for this woman's dog (it had pancreatitis-sp) We have some new grain free treats that Darford is promoting as ok for diabetic dogs and I have asked my staff to give her a box and have her that a look at them and tell us what she thinks.
I still think Taste of the Wild has a great ingredient list and hope the company gets it act together soon. Despite the voluntary recall, people still want it! Our sales of the Earthborn have been steady but some customers say they will switch back to TOW as soon as it becomes readily available again.

A few years ago, my Vet said that any Purina Product was good for your dog, although, she would like to recommend a Prescription Diet, or a Food that her Hospital endorced. Since then, I did my own research, and found that I prefer a Grain-Free Diet. Corn seems to be at the top of the list where "Fillers" are concerned. Some Dogs are allergic to Corn. Corn is fattening too as it is a Complex Carbohydrate. Like I said in a previous post, how many Wild Dogs back in the day, can be found in a Corn Field eating Corn? Another concern of mine, with the cheaper, Corn-Filled Dog Foods, is the Coloring! Coloring is not for the Dogs, it's a mind game for the Human's eye. Dogs don't care what COLOR their Food is, as long as it tastes good. I have to wonder if feeding a Dog :evil:Colored Food, isn't one of the reasons there are SO MANY Dog Cancers popping up? I fed my now deceased Dog, what ever was on Sale, until the last 3 years of her life. When I switched to Grain-Free, she perked up a LOT, and had the energy she once posessed as a young Pup. By then, I think it was too late, because she did die of Cancer. I will always blame that on the Fillers, and the coloring she ate the first 7 years of her life.

Many years ago, one of my all time favorite cats, BeBop was mostly white with big orange spots. A friend told me the food coloring in the food I was feeding was making his white coat a dingy yellow. I switched him to a higher quality food and before long, the yellowish tinge was gone.
RIP BeBop- you were one very special kitty.
