I'm not African American, but I'm for Aff. Act.

Reason being.

You can't tell me with a straight face that the good 'ole boy network isn't alive and well in the south.

With people like that still in place - with that mentality - do you really think that the playing field is level?

Yes. Yes...

Slavery etc happened a long time ago etc.. Get over it.. It's the present blah blah blah.

The playing field maybe somewhat level now, but after years and years of fighting an uphill battle, there's still a long way to go to catch up.

It bothers me that individuals, other than Caucasians, do not have enough confidence in themselves to get into any institution, based solely on their academic skills. Instead, they demand the government pass a bill enforcing a quota of various races in each school to encourage diversity. How about choosing students based on their educational qualification, instead of their race?

If you really think it's a confidence issue then you don't understand the real problem...

Believe me. I was in college with a lot of these confident Caucasians that got into school solely because of their parent's money and connections.

It's not all cut and dry...

Since you seem to think that I don't understand the real issue, would you mind clarifying that for me?

Is that a fact or self-observation?

I'm against AA for several reasons.
First, it's not fixing the problem the right way. You fix the problem by fixing education starting at the earliest grades and working your way up.

Second, it actually causes hate and discontent by raising the question, "are they here because they are the best qualified or are they here because they are black?" Don't tell me that you'd be ok with losing out on a job/promotion to a less qualified person.

I agree with your above statement. But, what about in places where it stems from years and years of prejudice? A while back Tiger Woods refused to play at an event because the place didn't allow african americans. Their response: it's been like this forever - it's not racist - it's just how we do it.

Okay. What about in places where people lose out on jobs because of their skin color?

Women suffer from the same problem as well. This isn't only an issue of race...

So your solution to rare and very localized problems is to create a national social science experiment? You must be a Democrat.

That's illegal. Sue them. It doesn't even take any money. The ACLU will put together their lawyer posse for you for free.

Neither did mine.

I paid for school and all associated costs myself. They actually offered to help, but I chose to do it my way.

So you're saying that blacks are not capable of doing that? Are you saying that they are somehow inferior? Racist!

No... I'm not saying that...

I'm saying if they - or anyone of color - don't even get the opportunity to because of skin color then it's a problem.

Heh. Funny. I'm a republican.

Not so sure I voted the right guy in though in retrospect...

All I'm saying is: the problem still persists and something needs to be done. Is the system perfect? No. You can't make everyone happy.

Have I been discriminated against? Not that I know of.

Have I seen someone get discriminated against? Absolutely.

Travel the world as an American. Travel to countries where we aren't well received. It is an enlightening experience to say the least...
