Yes.. I'm sure you're so discriminated against. Woe is you...
I would be if someone recieved a promotion based on the color of thier skin. Why should it only be illegal one way.

No... I'm not saying that...
I'm saying if they - or anyone of color - don't even get the opportunity to because of skin color then it's a problem.

Let's allow schools to decide based on their credentials, rather than their color. If a black person doesn't get into a school, its not because he/she is black; its because they aren't qualified.
In my opinion, african americans think they don't have to try as hard because they know affirmative action is on their side.
come on Bustem' Down -- that's a utopic point of view....
forget race for a second, take a poor family and a rich family... now the rich family can afford the best schools, the best school districts, private tutors, etc....now, the poor family cannot, they take the local public school system....
you are telling me that BOTH of them have equal opportunities??
Even assuming you do away with affirmative action, say you are at a job and you have a minority applicant......you interview both of them....the minority applicant has the exact same scores you do, BUT -- the minority applicant is hired, I bet you 9 times out of 10, people will attribute that person's ETHNICITY as being the deciding factor.... what is wrong with coming out and just saying you know what....yeah, we are going to give preference to minorities because in a school of 30,000 students, we have 15% minority representation, or in a company such as IBM, we have 10% minority workers.....but demographically speaking, minorities consist of approximately 40% of our nation's population ... by the year 2020, latino's should be MORE in number than caucasian people; yet, they are still one of the most underrepresented in schools, positions of power, etc...
There is a huge disparity.....I mean, to me, people like to put nice flowery labels on things to make themself feel better...I mean, someone is "mentally challenged" instead of being called a friggin' deranged lunatic.....likewise, with affirmative action, people equate that with reverse discrimination.....against the WHITE MAN.....
We have discrimination all around us, but we label it differently... there's economic discrimination (unless you have $1M in assets, you don't get to have the best fund manager personally overseeing your account, you get some schlup that graduated school handling your measly $10K retirement fund -- or, you can't afford to live in fairfax county so you don't get the best school district in the state....tough luck, you should have worked harder I guess), gender discrimination (I'm sure males can't become a rockette, or a dallas cowboy cheerleader; but, of course, that's different right,, anyone remember VMI?? Virginia Military institute...???) , sexual discrimination (oh, this person is gay, can't be a parish member, women can't be on the forefront of a battle line....etc....but, those are not as bad as affirmative action....
No... I'm not saying that...

What opportunity don't they get? I've never seen a college that says "no blacks"
Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. I think this is the case with AA.All I'm saying is: the problem still persists and something needs to be done. Is the system perfect? No. You can't make everyone happy.
I have too. A friend of mine couldn't get a co-op job with NASA because his GPA was only 3.9 and he's white. If he was a minority, he'd only need a 2.9Have I seen someone get discriminated against? Absolutely.
I've traveled to several foreign countries. Can't say that I ever felt any animosity towards me. :shrug:Travel the world as an American. Travel to countries where we aren't well received. It is an enlightening experience to say the least...
Wow.
Just wow.
Have you not followed the discourse taking place?
I've traveled to several foreign countries. Can't say that I ever felt any animosity towards me.
Then like was said before. Affirmative action is not a proper solution. If I wanted to be in a country where everyone had the same things no matter how successful they were, then I would move to a socialist country.
:fixed:Affirmative Action does NOT provide an equal opportunity for all citizens. It allows 40% of population (minority, excluding Asians) to butt in line, to meet the annual % in schools. I thought our country was about equal opportunities.
I'm curious. As an African American, are you for or against affirmative action?
Why do you feel the need to mock me?
I've posted enough in this section of the forum for you to already know the answer to this question....
I didn't post with the intention of mocking you. I've read one thread you've started and wanted your honest opinion.
....You've read one post I've started and my stance wasn't obvious?
I am against any program which offers an unfair advantage to any race.
This includes affirmitive action....
There was a time when affirmitive action was needed but in my opinion this time has long since past. Anyone can get into any college or get any job they want if they are qualified. I truly and whole heartedly believe this and I feel that any person who thinks we need affirmitive action is looking for handout.... Why put forth the effort if you can just "qualify" for a handout.

Now was that so difficult
Early AA opened many, many, many doors, now AA is expected to push the people it was designed to help through those doors and that is where it fails. AA should be abolished!!!
