Frank Melton, mayor of Jackson, Miss., and member of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" coalition, was convicted last week on two misdemeanor charges for carrying a weapon into a church and a park. In a third charge, reduced from what had previously been a felony count, the mayor pleaded no contest to carrying a gun on a university campus. Melton excused his criminal acts by stating, "I'm not another citizen. I am the mayor of Jackson." NSSF senior vice president and general counsel Lawrence G. Keane called upon Bloomberg to kick Melton out of his coalition. "Sadly, he's just another politician who believes he's above the law. If he had a shred of dignity he would resign." Melton will be allowed to stay in office. Full story:

Pistol Packing Mayor Convicted

By HOLBROOK MOHR

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Mayor Frank Melton, who has taken a hard stand against the city's rising crime rate, pleaded guilty to weapons charges Wednesday in a deal with prosecutors that lets him stay in office and out of jail.

The mayor stood and acknowledged the agreement more than 90 minutes after his trial on the charges was to start. A jury had already been seated.

Melton, 57, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors for carrying a weapon into a church and a park, and no contest to a reduced charge on what had been a felony count involving a gun on a university campus.

He was given a six-month suspended sentence on each count, plus one year probation, and was fined $1,500.

Under state law, a felony conviction would have forced Melton from office and could have sent him to prison for as long as three years. Prosecutors agreed to reduced the felony for carrying a gun onto the campus of the Mississippi College School of Law to a misdemeanor of carrying a concealed weapon in exchange for the pleas.

Melton, a former Jackson television station executive and one-time state drug enforcement agency chief, was elected in 2005 on a tough-on-crime platform.

He has drawn national attention for his unconventional leadership style -- including taking part in police raids and roadblocks -- in the city of 184,000, which has a crime rate nearly twice the national average

Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson has also brought unrelated charges against Melton and his two Police Department bodyguards for their alleged role in smashing up a duplex on Aug. 26. Melton has said the home was a drug haven, an allegation the property owners deny. The property owners also have sued Melton.

The American Civil Liberties Union had accused Melton, who is black, of civil rights violations, including racial profiling.

Thats awesome, maybe we should just arm all the politicians and take away the common mans rights to own and carry firearms.

That's about the gist of it. They want to disarm everyone but themselves. :ohwell:

This really should not surprise anyone. All of the politicians who are out there pulling for gun control and the abolishment of the 2nd Amendment have a ton of armed people around them for "protection".

If I have to travel to Waldorf without being allowed to protect myself, why shouldn't Nancy Pelosi have to do the same thing?

I think that this also shows why gun control laws are pretty ineffective. The guy gets busted for a grievous fellony offense for endangering students, and gets to plea his way out of jail. Same as P-Diddy breaking over a dozen federal, state, and city firearms laws and only getting charged with the least of the lot.

In his defense, what's the point of issuing a concealed weapon permit if you aren't allowed to carry it anywhere?

Public Parks? College Campuses? Church? Riots? Demonstrations? WHere illegal drugs are used or sold(this one kind of already covers Parks, Campuses and church)?
