Hand-pump wells allowed?

When I had my main water line replaced a bunch of years ago, one of the techs used a dousing rod to locate the pipe, and was more accurate than the guy with a metal finding meter.

As a guy who tracked utilities six days a week for about 10 years that's hogwash.

Simple to cut apart, meter pit here, water line comes into house here. A line between each is where the water line is.

Some experiments have shown that dowsers may be able to find water or oil when more traditional methods have failed, but only if they have some unconscious knowledge of where the target is. For example, they might be using clues from vegetation, geography, or temperature. When these possibilities are eliminated in controlled experiments, such as by running water through underground pipes, dowsers are unsuccessful.

I'd agree, but there were no clues other than where the line exited the house. This was before I had a meter, pit, etc... and no one had a clue where the line ran to the street, no visual clues.

That said, yeah, it's a black art and not reliable. In this case, the douser did find it where the other tools failed.

Well, with knowing where it exited the house, and the feed was in the street. It's a pretty good guess the direction it went.

Galvanized iron pipe about 4 foot down. Which is why I was surprised the metal detector didn't find it.

It gets no better than that. Most likely it was the person using it.
