Happy’s Diner Restaurant Review

(Not my review) but, I don't think that I'd like to have someone suggesting that I may not be American if I don't eat a certain food item from his menu.

Happy told us that if you are an American you eat hot dogs.

And, if that's the way Happy feels about it, why does he offer other items on his menu?

He said the same thing to my son the last time we went. It was his birthday so Happy said he'd give my son a free foot long hot dog in honor of his birthday. My son really didn't want it but said ok. The food has always been good there but Happy kind of freaks my kids out because he makes the youngest one spell either his name or my husband's or my name for the order. He also calls them GI Joe, which they don't know who that is.

I don't think he was. We went in there a while back and said that maybe he should put some Turkish food or at least some other types of mediterranean food. He pretty much flipped out and said the same thing, that we are in America and need to eat American food (sterotypical American food of what foreigners think of what American's eat, like hot dogs, hamburgers, and fried chicken. Humm, last time I checked, American's eat that stuff ALL the time, snark snark  ). Hence to say, have not been back when you make a suggestion to an owner and he flips out when making a basic suggestion.

Honestly, if I want a good burger, I think Frying Pan's burgers are better anyway.

I think Happy must be from Nebraska because he reminds me very much of the diner owners from my childhood.

Rocky from Rocky's Cafe in Havelock (Rocky was a woman, btw) who used to push me to eat the liver, telling me I wouldn't get tall if I didn't (hey! she was right!).

The guy from Traveler's truck stop who used to pull a quarter out of my ear and pull his thumb off EVERY SINGLE TIME I went in there.

The waitresses at King's who used to have me read the menu when I was little, and would call out to other customers, "Hey Collie! Listen to this kid read!"

In the midwest we call that "friendly".

Not sure why it would be offensive for Happy to recommend the foot long or say that Americans eat hot dogs - they DO eat hot dogs. Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet. No mention of Turkish or Mediterranean food in there. I'm also not sure why you'd suggest an American diner serve that stuff anyway.

PS, to the review writer: A corn dog appetizer is usually little smokies battered and fried corn dog style. It's definitely an appetizer, or sometimes you can get it as a basket with fries.

The dead giveaway that Happy is a midwesterner is if he puts cheese frenchees on the menu. You all won't understand that, either.

Happy is anything but a midwesterner. He's a middle-easterner.

It's his shtick, and it is only meant as a joke. Yes, it does get a little old after a while, but I'd rather have an owner who is a little goofy than a manager who acts like a robot and recites the lines they learned in training at corporate headquarters.

Isn't this the guy from Jumping Jacks? When that place was open, a bunch of us from work called in a lunch order. We didn't get out of the office on time and so we were late. He yelled at us for being late when we got there. He was probably trying to be funny, but we never went back.

It sounds like Happy's Diner is only for happy people, and the unhappy should stick to their chain restaurants where no one will assault them with genuine friendliness or humor.

Where is Happy's Diner?

It is in the plaza across from the Lusby Post office where Jake & Al's is. We ate in there one morning awhile back. Nothing fancy but the food was good, inexpensive and we found Happy to be quite the character. As opposed to sit down restaurants where you are served by a waitress or waiter, this was order and pick up at the counter, fast and easy.

I hope he makes it there. Most small businesses in that plaza have failed.
