So many people I talk to, including members of my own family refuse to go to St. Mary's for anything. Instead they choose to go to Calvert which is substantially further away from where we live. But the good news is they are not part of the Medstar money game.
Mommy Dearest has had nothing but grief when admitted to St. Mary's Hospital. At her age, she remembers the care you used to receive prior to obamacare. The last couple of times she was admitted, we had no choice in the matter and she ended up at SMH. I don't knock the staff for following the rules. Their hands are tied. There are a lot of good, caring staff there, but there are also some very un-personable ones as well. At her age, they require a good bit of coddling to make things go smoothly. You can distinguish the ones who have a calling, and the ones who are just performing the job, by the way the deal with their elderly patients.
On the flip side, I recently had the misfortune of being in contact with a group of individuals in the ER at SMH that worked their asses off to save a young accident victim. I truly believe they gave every ounce of energy they could muster to save this young life, and were completely and utterly drained when their collective efforts couldn't save him. With injuries as extensive as he suffered, there is only so much they could do, and he was called home. Those were some that have the calling and I'm forever indebted to them for the effort they put forth.
