I got a virus. Vundo, gebby.dll

I scanned twice with two different AV programs I have on my pc. They both spotted it but they couldn't disinfect or delete it. I went to the virus center to see how to manually remove it and tried it but it gave me the message that I can not delete it because another person or program is using it. :twitch:

So, as the days have gone by the pc has gotten slower, and slower.

I want to take it to Best Buy but since it is a new store I don't know if they have good repair service (yet). Can anyone recommend someone in the St Mary's area who I can take my pc to in order to have it debugged. Thanks in advance! :flowers:

We've taken our daughters computer to TQCI several times. Never disappointed, reasonably priced.

Thanks, :flowers: I've thought about trying to perform surgery myself :lmao: but I have done enough and before it's all over I will have totally screwed things up.

I am going to buy a new pc but this one has so much media on it that I dread switcherooing.

Thanks, I will try this tonight but most of the virus removal software has not been able to delete it. But, there is always a first time. :flowers:

If you can't get it and don't want to take it to TQCI, feel free to PM me.

I would suggest moving all the media to an External drive or DVD, but chances are you'd move the virus with it.

If saving your files wasn't an issue I'd just format the drive and reinstall programs that you know aren't infected, plus an up to date Virus Scanner.

But it sounds like you have it fixed already.

Thank you both.

I'm assuming the answers to my questions about who you are and your qualifications will be given in PM too. But, yes I will hit you up if TQCI doesn't work out for me. :flowers:

I wish it was that easy, But I have so much music, pictures, games and documents on my pc about 24GB's worth and I do not anticipate moving those. I am going to back my stuff up to a flash drive once this is cleared out. Thanks for the reminder for backing my files up. :flowers:

Though inevitably....

I think I am going to just bite the bullet and take it in for evaluation and repair with TQCI after I do all of the stuff you guys told me to try. :killingme

 Not like that.

I build computers as a hobby. I'd do it as a side job but there isn't enough money in it. Dell sells computers with software packages cheaper than I can build the hardware.

It only place it pays off is with high-end machines. But, of course, most people buying them build their own. And in that market, though I could easily beat Dell, I can't compete with ebay. They sell stuff everyday for exactly what it would cost for me to build it.

As far as software, it and I don't get along as well as I'd like. I can fix most things, but don't ask me to build a server, mess with the registry, fix complicated network issues, programs that like to fight each other, or write a program. Those things and I are not friends. But for pretty much everything else, I know enough. It kinda happens when you spent most of your time playing with DOS as a kid.

Never needed TQCI, but I hear good things. Good luck with them.

For backups: flash drive isn't going to store 24 GB's and flash memory degrades over time. Aside from another drive (preferably RAID set-up), you're best bet is DVD back-ups. Though, it takes awhile. I have the cadillac of DVD burners and it took hours (spread over a few days) to back up the 20 GB's that I had.

By saying 'pesky', I meant persistant also. I cannot recall if the Vundo fix I recommened did a comeplete removal or not, but give it a shot and see. If not, and you are unfamiliar with going into the registry and snooping around, you might want to consult someone who is. The version of Vundo I had was just annoying, not harmful in the sense of loss, or damage.
On a brighter note, I learned a lot from the removal, and so will you, if that helps.
