Pick a reputable online store, or heaven forbid, Staples.

An external Drive can start from 50$ and range up to (You don't want to know), and can range in size from 50 to Terrabytes, pick your connection, most USB2's are fast and reliable or get the ultra spiffy version and go Firewire. Most are plug and play compatible.

Granted, some viruses can operate from the External, and an infected file is still infected no matter what medium its stored on.

So I guess its more of a suggestion for a future back up or an alternative storage.

I keep it sync'd with a few directories at home and at work, so all my stuff is in dupilcate/triplicate. That way if I have to format one drive, the external drive has my important stuff after the reinstall. And can then copy it to the clean drive.
(Barring I scanned the files before uploading them to the external)

You all are brainiacs...

...and I love it!!!

 Thanks for the great tips.

Coaster, that Vundo I am believing steers from Winfixer. My pop-up blockers were operating in turbo where I couldn't even click a link without it blocking it. So when I turned it off I think I made myself vulnerable. I checked out your link and looks like the same thing. However, it seems like this is something I need >>> D:Windows/System32/GEBBY.DLL (if I remember correctly that was the virus message).

Chain, I want my mom's pc upgraded from MS 2000 to Windows XP Home and more hard drive space added. Are you the one to come to? She would love that.

Xbrand, I have no clue what you typed but I like it. I need to get the flash drive to transfer my old data to the new pc I will buy. I could probably burn everything to CD's but that would take longer right. I can put a folders on a flash drive right?

XP home runs $93 shipped from Newegg. The hard drive I would personally go with (assuming its EIDE and internal) costs $76 for 200 GB, shipped from Newegg. I wouldn't charge for the install. Its a cakewalk job and I'm happy to help nice people.

If you/she wants an external instead, I can look that up as well.

Keep in mind, the hard drive price quoted is one scenario. Is she looking for another internal drive? Just a bigger one? Does she have the slot available for another internal drive? Or does she want an external drive? If she wants an external, does she have a free USB port?

You can either answer that, or I can take a look. Either way, that just solves the machine answers. I still need to know what she's looking for or would prefer. External is bit slower and cost more; but it's great if you want to archive files/movies/pictures/etc. and use them on several different machines (one at a time of course). Or you could always buy networked storage...

Please feel free to contact me if you run out of options. I provide expert in-home service and repair including evenings and weekends.

Thanks,

I got a virus. Vundo, gebby.dll

I scanned twice with two different AV programs I have on my pc. They both spotted it but they couldn't disinfect or delete it. I went to the virus center to see how to manually remove it and tried it but it gave me the message that I can not delete it because another person or program is using it. :twitch:

So, as the days have gone by the pc has gotten slower, and slower.

I want to take it to Best Buy but since it is a new store I don't know if they have good repair service (yet). Can anyone recommend someone in the St Mary's area who I can take my pc to in order to have it debugged. Thanks in advance! :flowers:

Lexi, did you ever get you're computer fixed? If so, how was TQCI?

Yes, I got the computer fixed. I took it in on that Saturday and got it back on Tuesday evening because I realized I had to call them and that they don't call you. :ohwell:

I apparently had over 26 infections and they fixed the errors I was having at start-up. Total was $90. Would I take it there again, probably so, but I think they are no longer operating. I need to take an old hard drive somewhere and have it copied to discs using "drivespace" from Windows 95.

As far as their customer service it could have been a little more sociable. The ladies at the front just smile a lot like they know something. The tech that worked on my pc didn't really seem interested in going into details about what the problems were.

In fact, our conversation went a little like this:

Me: "So, what all was wrong with it?"
Him: "It had about 26 infections..."
Me: "Was it from the spyware software I used?"
Him: "No, that worked fine but it wasn't up to date."
Me: "I just downloaded it in January."
Him: "Yeah, but the last update was from November."
Me: "Oh, ok."
Me: "What about the errors at start-up?"
Him: "They're gone."
Me: "And, did you see :blahblah: ?"
Him: "Yep, fixed!"
Me: "Ok, thanks."

He did help me with the pc to my car. I guess I really was expecting more of a "You don't want to do this, be careful of that, you might want to make sure that you..." or some info that would be helpful so that the problem doesn't occur again. And, they did install an AV program that is suppose to be really good.

For $90, I would have done it for you!!

But the links above.. you run the HijackThis software, it produces a log file.. you copy and paste the log file into a new thread and someone will come along, read your log file, tell you what is wrong, and what you need to do to fix it.

I'd do it now to see if they actually fixed/ removed your problems or if they are just lying dormant, and will be a problem again in the future.

It's a totally free site, and run by volunteers.. but I'm sure they might take donations..

I did some research on fixing the "wares" of viruses and saw that hijackthis and the lists they copy and post. It was a foreign language to me and a bit too technical. In the past I have always played doctor with the pc and then mess things up so badly that the pc is never the same again. I figured in order to not lose this one I'd better let the experts handle it.

That's always a fear.

I will make an effort to do the hijack tonight and post it.

We've taken our daughters computer to TQCI several times. Never disappointed, reasonably priced.

Safe mode(F8 on startup), Run MSCONFIG, don't allow the application to run on startup or in services. You may only have a few moments to do this if it's anything like msblaster was.

Reboot, see if it goes, then do a file search for it's exact location and then delete it.
