Help!! I'm at my wits end!

Okay everyone...

I'm having an absolutely impossible time potty training my 2 1/2 year old. I've tried just about everything I can think of and he's just not getting it. He goes to daycare during the day and I think she's not encouraging it as much as she should...so he regresses after he's been there during the day. Sometimes he'll go on the potty but for the most part, he's more interested in disappearing for or a few minutes and crapping his pants :(
Does anyone have any helpful tips for a Mom who's getting ready to pull her hair out?

Relax and deal. Sounds like he's not ready yet. Is it worth the stress to have it done now?

Some kids don't get it until they are three or four. Sounds like he's normal.

Try a nickel jar, every time he goes on the potty he gets a nickel at the end of the month he goes to the store to spend his money.

When my daughter turned 3 I made a big to-do about no more diapers after her birthday.

I bought her several packs of "big kid" underwear with favorite characters on them and a large container of Oxy Clean for the carpets. :lmao: It worked!

Good point. But he seems like he's ready...he constantly takes his pants and diaper off and sprints around naked...or craps his diaper and then walks through it!

The big boy undies have helped a lot (or course my husband freaks out because I call them undies but...) I guess because they feel so different after you've had an "accident"?

I feel your pain! I went through the same thing with my son. He may just not be ready. My son was doing all of the same things at the same age, and he wasn't potty-trained until he was 3 years, 2 months. I was really concerned that he wasn't potty-trained at 3, and when I questioned the pediatrician at his yearly check-up his comment was that he was a boy, he was progressing normally, I was doing all the right things, and just to relax and he would be potty-trained when he was ready. Good luck and don't stress yourself!

I was able to potty train mine over a weekend. I bought a large desk calender and a bunch of those little rewards stickers and told my son every time he went pee he would get one sticker and if he pooped he would get two stickers and once he got ten stickers I would immediatly take him to Walmart to pick a toy. Worked like a charm but by the next day I already had to buy him a toy and he learned quickly that he could only release half a poop at a time and get two stickers and go directly back to the bathroom and finish and get two more stickers. After the first couple of days of giving stickers and toys we changed it to M&Ms, no prize. Good Luck, mine did this the weekend before his 3rd birthday

Keep him away from my house :killingme My daughter is also the queen of naked! When we walk in the door the clothes start flying. She's only 22 months old yesterday. We're working on the potty training also. She'll sit there for awhile, then get up and pee on the floor. I'm finding diapers everywhere! She'll take them off and hide them, luckily no poopy ones yet.

believe me, they will just do it. I never pushed any of mine and they all were out of diapers by the time they were 3 yrs old.

My oldest was easy! I have one that will be 3 in Dec. and he just got it last week. I used treats and pull ups worked for him. But my oldest one would go in the pullups because they felt like a diaper. It is normal for some to potty train later than others especially with the pooping part. Patience. and on boys for the potty part if you put M&M's in the toilet when they pee on them they turn colors.

He's not ready. What's the hurry? Stressing him about it is only gonna make it worse. Don't blame the daycare workers. He's not ready.

These are all great suggestions...and thanks so much for the encouragement. As parents, we all know that things get extremely frustrating. It helps when you have supportive people to give you nudge in the right directions and encouraging words! I was starting to feel like a failure as a mother because so many of my friends who have children his age are constantly talking about their "darling geniuses" who were potty trained at the ripe old age of 1 1/2 or 2...and I felt like I was behind the times.
Does anyone find it more difficult when their kids are in daycare to potty train (and I'm not BLAMING the daycare provider, I understand it sounded that way in my first post. She's a wonderful woman who has been his other "grandma" since he was six weeks old. She just has many children to deal with and I don't know if that affects it)?

Sorry if I sounded harsh. Your son is definitely not behind and I understand there is pressure from others. It'll be much easier for you if you give him some time. And yes, it is definitely harder when you can't be with them during the day to be on top of them about going potty and making sure they are thinking about it. You are doing everything you should...he just doesn't seem ready yet.

How did mothers potty train their children before the invention of smilie stickers and spaceage potty chairs?
