by fruit flies at work. I don't understand this, no one has fruit laying around. There is no food laying around period. Garbage is removed daily. I don't know how to get rid of these darn anoying buggies!

Anyone have suggestions? I'm ready to burn the building down to get rid of them! :tantrum:

Pour some vinegar in a bowl. Add a drop of liquid soap. Watch them drown. The soap breaks the surface tension. Without that, they can stand on top of the vinegar and drink.

Fly strips work quite lovely...

Just don't get you hair stuck in them...

Take an empty water bottle and cut it in half. Put a hole in the lid - about the size of a pencil. Pour about 1/2 inch of orange juice, wine or vinegar in the bottom of the water bottle, then flip the top half over into the bottom half. Tape the top and bottom together. The top half is positioned like a funnel. The flies fly in but can not seem to find the way out.
In about 3 days I trapped at least 100 of them (quite satifiying to watch them drown).

Other then that - if you have an 8 year old around - hand him a fly swatter and he will keep busy for a couple of hours :)

I'm headed to the store for some vinegar (that's what I'm telling the boss, but I'm really thinking wine)

Some mentioned drain flies, but this is at work and we are on city water, not a septic tank. Can you get drain flies on city water? If so, I'm calling METCOM! They can buy the jug of wine.

The drain flies live in the pipes inside the building. It has nothing to do with septic/sewer.

There is a noticeable difference between drain flies and gnats/fruit flies. Drain flies have larger slightly rounder wings but are very poor at flying. Apple cider vinegar with a couple drops of dish detergent in it will get rid of gnats/fruit flies but if you have drain flies, the drains need a good cleaning because they live on the stuff stuck inside the pipes.

We have one live plant, but it's been here since before summer. How do you kill gnats in a plant? and how would I know if the plant is infested with gnats? :jameo:

They said to distrub the plant (i.e., shake) and if gnats come out it's the plant. I don't know how they killed the gnats, the plant service company we used just removed it and replaced it, maybe the repotted it?

If you rinse the plant well (not roots) and repot, put plant in a cool place and the gnats will leave for a warmer area. Then bring back in, should be fine. Plant dirt is probably too moist.

a salt shaker with 1/2 inch of cider vinegar works great...they fly in the little holes, can't get out...empty and refill every few days

We had this issue and tried Mickeys malt liquor in little containers and put the plastic over them. Put a few little holes and it helped quite a bit. Wine was another one that seemed to work.
