Ok I have 2 cats (fixed, 3 years old, brother & sister) that have always used the litter box just fine until about 6 months ago. They started peeing on the stairs next to where the box was, and even though we tried cleaning & neutralizing it they still peed there. So my husband pulled the carpet up, sanded & stained the steps. Problem solved right?? Not! :banghead: Now they pee on the floor by the litter box! The box is clean and we have scrubbed & used every kind of urine-be-gone crap there is. No help! We keep the box clean and they’ll poo in the box, but not pee. My husband is tired of cleaning it up & threatening to throw them out. I dont mind cleaning, but it’s starting to stink my house up. HELP!!!:whack:

Could be a urinary tract issue. Our cat used to do that. Turned out to be magnesium crystals in her bladder. I'd take them to the vet and have them checked. If they do have magnesium build up, you will need to switch to a "low ash" "urinary health" food. We use Purina One.

Kilz 2 will kill the odor, but I don't think you want that on your wood floors. I agree about the urinary tract thing, also if you have changed litters that will do it. You are supposed to have one box per cat plus one. So for two cats you need 3 boxes. Scoop and clean regularly, maybe even several times a day. I would think though if it had been urinary tract infection and this has been going on for six months they would both be dead. But take them to the vet to rule out some other sort of illness. Try getting larger boxes too, sometimes that helps. Good luck! :howdy:

Exactly!!
Have a friend who's cat was doing the same thing. She has two cats, two boxes and only one of them was not peeing in the box.
Are you using only dry food? Because of what she's been going through with her cats I've switched to dry in AM and soft in PM. Vet told her there isn't enough moisture in dry food alone but on the other hand dry is good for dental hygiene.

Litter Maid

You know, I used to believe whole heartedly in those, then I got more than one cat and it turned out to be just as much trouble, if not more trouble, than a regular box with a plastic liner.

Never had problems with Litter Maid. I tried regular litter box with liner. Cats still peed outside of the box. When I got the Litter Maid, cats stopped peeing outside of the box because the Litter Maid automatically "clean" the litter right after the cat leave the box. My cats LOVED them! I have had them for 8 years.

It's really depend on the cats on which "box" they prefers to use.

Thanks!

Ok so we found out it was just the girl cat doing it, so we changed the food to the low ph urinary track food, which they seem to devour! We also found another spot for another litter box, so far so good! Fingers crossed it sticks, whatever it is that did it, yay!!

Thanks again!:huggy:

My cat started doing that and when I took her in she had crystals so now she eats special food.
