Help your friends and family get off Windows XP

Today marks 60 days until the end of support for Windows XP and we need your help spreading the word to ensure people are safe and secure on modern up-to-date PCs. As a reader of this blog, it’s unlikely you are running Windows XP on your PC. However, you may know someone who is and have even served as their tech support. To help, we have created a special page on Windows.com that explains what “end of support” means for people still on Windows XP and their options to stay protected after support ends on April 8th:

Upgrade their current PC if it meets the system requirements for Windows 8.1. They can download and run the Windows Upgrade Assistant on their current PC to check and see if it can run Windows 8.1 and then follow the steps in this tutorial to upgrade (including backing up all their data). They will not be able to keep any files, settings, or applications when upgrading Windows XP, so they will need to back up all their files and locate any installation discs (or purchase confirmation emails) prior to doing the upgrade.

Get a new PC. The easiest path to Windows 8.1 is with new devices and there are offers and deals from many retailers to help people get a new device. They can stay up to date on the latest offers on Windows PCs and tablets via the Windows Buying Guide and learn how to choose a new PC. Once they choose and buy a new device, they can transfer their files from their old PC by copying them to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud storage like SkyDrive*. And they can watch these videos to get familiar with Windows 8.1.

I'd say Get off Windows ... and on a Mac :killingme

I have XP, and it still rocks my world. My next computer will be a windows based as well. Screw apple and any piece of electronics that has a logo of a piece of fruit with a bite out of it. Good equipment, but the arrogance, smarminess and condescension that comes from that company make me puke.:yahoo:

Anyone hear about this affecting medical/dental offices concerning HIPPA laws? IT guy said something about HIPPA requiring offices to upgrade to a new Windows so they're in compliance.

I have probably spent almost 20 hours in the last couple of weeks upgrading 3 of my business computers from XP to windows 7 pro and I still can't go 'live' with all computers. This process would have been so much easier with Macs. I will gladly pay the premium for the ease of upgrading with Apple, unfortunately the specialized software we use in our business will not run on an Mac.

For those of you who have never used an Apple computer, you just don't understand our frustration with Microsoft in cases like this. JMO

could be

for companies taking Credit Cards - PCI Compliance requires an operating system that it regularly patched by the vendor, has anti-virus - for all systems Processing / Holding CC Data - we even had to swap out the old style CC Terminals with units that uses encryption [the old dialup Terminals]

I could see Windows Based Medical Equipment [:shocking: :twitch:] / Electronic Medical Records Systems having similar requirements

The computers that take cc info are already updated. Dental offices though were not required to go paperless. They do submit claims electronically. Maybe it won't affect dental, except the fact that whatever computer isn't upgraded becomes a security risk for all computers networked together.

what software Are you running ?

I would have recommended a computer replacement ... for units still running XP ... if you were on Vista, Win 7 would be just fine ... getting drivers for older hardware can be problematic

Retail software that is only supported with Windows.

Well I did buy 2 new computers, but there is still the issue of transferring all software and hardware and then spending time on the phone with tech support to get everything 'talking' to each other again, getting parameters set for the new hardware, downloading the latest updates, etc - a real PITA! A brand-new computer from Dell out of the box custom built for our industry needs and Windows still had to update and reboot 3 times before we could do anything else with it.

And then for the 3rd computer that I decided to upgrade rather than replace, I spent $200 on Windows pro. Apple's last upgrade was free - the one before that only $29.

And trying to do all of this while still trying to take customers' money and keep them happy….
