How do houses manage to burn to the ground when I can't even get a fireplace going without a starter log or a ton of newspaper??

They should make houses out of fireplace wood - then if they caught fire, they'd just smolder a bit and go out instead of flaming up.

What don't you understand about lighting a fire? Crumble paper, kindling on top, strike match, light paper, and voila, FIRE!! :banana:P.S. Never, ever, used a starter log and I wasn't no Boyscout. Although I always liked the girlscouts.

kindling on top
Our wood-dude supplied kindling is long gone and I have no intention of chopping more.

:lightbulb: I know! I'll throw an ashtray with a lit cigarette in there and pretend I'm sleeping. THAT should light it up!

:killingme When I can stop laughing I'll tell you what else works instead of kindling. :killingme :smoochy: If you've got pine trees around?? Everywhere in MD. Pinecones make the best kindling.

I think the problem is that people who can't start a fire in a fireplace, shouldn't be playing with fire in the first place, thus they wouldn't burn their house down?

Here is a survival school fire starter tip. Cotton balls with a little petroleum jelly (not a lot, just a little); keep a supply of them in a ziploc bag. When ready to start a fire stretch the cotton balls out thin, place underneath your starter material (kindling) and set a match to them. It works out in the rain so you should be able to do it indoors.

Take the lint from your dryer (especially after doing a load of jeans or towels) and save it. It makes great fire starter. You don't need to chop kindling. Take the bark off some of the logs and break it into smallish pieces, that'll work well.

You must be using old gasoline. Go to the station and bring back a pint of that really expensive gasoline.
