Hey Mainman

LordStanley

I know nothing
Last night we just bought an Hp Pavillion dv9008 notebook. It didnt come with any systems or application disks. The hard drive is partitioned so we can run image software thats already installed for all of our back ups. Neat Idea, but then again I dont Like not having control of my PC.

Thank god I have an Xp disk at work, incase we run into issues like Mike.

Mike If Mainman cant make it over, let me know. Im also a techie and can fix the problem.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.

WINDOWS\SYS32\CONFIG\SYS

You can attempt repair by starting windows setup using orig. CD. Select "R" at the 1st screen.
Your Registry is corrupt. Because the Registry is corrupt, you won't be able to get in to the Repair Console; It'll just show you the same BSOD.

You have several options:

Buy or find someone with Winternals ERD Commander.
Find someone with BartPE.
OR
Take out your harddrive and put it into one of your other computers(or a friends computer).

Once you do this, you need to copy the registry files your most current System Restore RP(you do have System Restore active, right?)

Make a backup of:

c:\windows\system32\config\system
c:\windows\system32\config\software
c:\windows\system32\config\sam
c:\windows\system32\config\security
c:\windows\system32\config\default
To c:\windows\tmp

You may have to create the directory.

After you backed up those files, delete the originals in c:\windows\system32\config

Now copy the registry files from your most current RP. ie., C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D86480E3-73EF-47BC-A0EB-A81BE6EE3ED8}\RP1\Snapshot

They will be named:

_REGISTRY_MACHINE_.DEFAULT
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM

You will need to rename them to:

DEFAULT
SECURITY
SOFTWARE
SYSTEM
SAM

Put your harddrive back into it's original computer and boot it up. If all went well, you should have a working system.

I gotta question!!

Why won't either of my computers let me uninstall MSN Messenger? It keeps telling me something about a packet and I can't get rid of the crap :banghead:

MSN Messenger is one of those "embedded" programs Microsoft includes with Windows. It can't be uninstalled; but there are ways to "remove" it.

Can't you disable it (MSN) through the registry?

I'm listening

The problem is, its taking up ALOT of space. I have MSN 7 on my computer downstairs but also MSN Live. Well, I dont need both of them, so I wanna get rid of 7. On this computer, for some reason I have 7.5 and it always tells me there is a new version available but it wont let me download it. I wanna get rid of the old one then go download the new one.

I've been using this software program for a few years:

RegCleaner <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=j>RegCleaner is an easy to use program. With RegCleaner you can easily get rid of those old and obsolete registry entries created by software that you have ...

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
You can use it in a "manual" mode if you want to get rid of specific registry entries, or, you can set it up to run in an automatic mode, which fixes any irregularities or corrupted files by clicking on the Preferences Tab. (the automatic mode won't erase your unwanted MSN IM files, but in the manual mode, you ID any any file that contains references to MSN IM, then check the box to highlight and remove the files.)

It's Freeware too!

Yes, it can be disabled through the registry but it will still occupy disk space. But the following I'm about to suggest to Fallen should remove it from disk.

Fallen, try the following:

Click on Start, Click on Run, type in the following:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Reboot

How do you stop it from loading and running in the background everytime you boot up? I don't use it but I don't want to remove it either.

In regedit, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft
Create a new key: Messenger
Create a new key under Messenger: Client
Create a DWORD under Client: PreventRun with a Data Value of 1

Now, will that remove every version of MSN that I have or just the one I'm trying to remove?

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists, and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.
when I try to remove it from the Add/Remove list. :ohwell:

I'm not sure why you are getting that. Try reinstalling MSN 7, then uninstall it in the normal fashion.
