Here's the question.... maybe this long email just put her to sleep instead
Last night on my way home from work I was coming down route 5 about 6:30 at night and traffic was flying both directions northbound and southbound by the Brandywine 381 light (the insane double lights back to back) as I whizzed past I noticed a black and white cat just sitting their in the median and not going either way, just sitting there and staring at the traffic. I said “Dear Lord” to myself... and realized I couldn’t stop to help it it and prayed on it. Then as I was getting ready to make my left turn at the light to proceed onto 381. I then decided that maybe I could help the cat get off the median safely and maybe take it back home with me to get vetted and then put up found cat flyers, etc... as there is not any houses around – just woods.
I get to the light, determined to turn around and hurry up and help the cat before anything happens and then as soon as the tun signal light turns yellow, the car in front slams its breaks on. "Great!! I'm now stuck at the light - more time wasted", I'm thinking as I'm stuck and I think as I’m trying to turn aruond to now go northbound route 5 to get the cat off the median... and it just so happened I had leftover chicken from KFC dinner that I picked up and ate on my way home. I eventually got up to the cat and pulled over into the median..
The cat spotted me in the truck and looked frieghtened... I didn’t move because I didn’t want him to run out into the traffic so I waited until the traffic died down the best I could (i.e. all the cars getting stuck at a light further up the road). As soon as I opened my door carefully and said.. hey kitty!!! kitty!!! and went to toss a peice of chicken at him.... he darted into the road. A white car was flying (outrageously speeding) down the road and the cat ran right towards it and then I don’t know if it was a guardian angle, a 9 lives cat thing or what... but the cat ran towards the car... was running so fast it darted to the left and right in a blink of an eye and then did a backwards flip avoiding this car. The acrobatic moves worked for the cat and it ran off into the woods.
What should I have done? Should I have tried to get the cops involved to stop traffic to help the cat safely out of the median? I just feel terrible... the cat could have been killed because of me. What do you do in a situation like that... Sometimes animals can sense animal lovers and I thought maybe I could help it as I work really well with animals. I didn’t want to post this because I was worried would pass judgement and I’ve felt bad about this all night and day and keep having flashbacks of that poor cat almost getting hit. It was like a nightmare where ya’ yelll NOOOOO!!!! while watching. It just happened so quick and the cat did survive but what could I have done different that would have helped the cat?

dems, you obviously already know that thinking you could cozy up to a strange cat in a median was not the brightest thing to do...you pretty much stated that yourself twice. To answer your question... I think what you could of done different was to leave the cat be and thereby giving him one less distraction so that he could attempt to cross the road when he was good and ready rather than what some strange woman started throwing chicken at him.dems4me said:I just feel terrible... the cat could have been killed because of me. I was just wondering how this was vrail's area of expertise.dems4me said:

Well my take is that an animal trapped on a five foot strip of dirt between lines of speeding traffic will be frightened, and when one of these scary things starts stalking it flight will probably be the first reaction. Next time be humane and just shoot it.dems4me said:I was asking her what kind of forum rules the animal forums had -- if they were fair game for belittling someone of if they were hands off like the religious forum. I didn't want to be berated for this. I feel badly enough the cat could have gotten hurt or killed.
kwillia said:dems, being the wonder that you are with animals, I'm sure you know it is perfectly natural for a cat, be it a stray or be it someone's beloved pet, to bolt when confronted. You drove it into traffic.
As for the turtle, if you safely pull over to the side of the road to move a turtle, so be it. A turtle is much slower than you, speed-wise.
And be sure to come back and tell us how it went.dems4me said:Should I have gotten a cop involved that was parked at the tattoo place doing radar, etc???
You should consider yourself lucky you didn't cause an accident.kwillia said:And be sure to come back and tell us how it went.
