High Fructose Corn Syrup

Someone is lying. Who is it? The Corn Refiner's Association says HFCS is no different than cane sugar, but they want to change the name to "corn sugar" to avoid the negative stigma associated with HFCS. Sounds to me like they're just trying to trick us. Researchers at Princeton have concluded that HFCS is not at all the same as sugar. The article states:

A recent study out of Princeton University showed that “rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.

“In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides.”

I don't know who is lying but I think the real concern should be the fact that HFCS is added to so many food products.

That's because we subsidize corn, which lowers the price and makes farmers grow more. We have too much corn, so we have to add it to food and put it in our gas.

Why?

I think the boogety about HFCS is a scam by the cane sugar people. If you eat a bunch of table sugar, you're going to get just as blobby as if you eat corn sugar. It's like that whole McDonald's thing: yeah, if you eat 5 Big Macs and a bushel of fries every day, you're going to get fat. And guess what? If you eat the equivalent calories of carrots, tofu, or cabbage, you're going to get just as fat.

PS, researchers will many times find what they want to find, then publish those results as if they were truly scientific and unbiased. Global warming, anyone?

Anyone remember the whole "bran" deal a couple decades ago? If you ate a grunchload of bran it was supposed to cure everything. Turns out it was nothing more than a ploy by the toilet paper people to boost sales. :ohwell:

I've always been a proponent of real sugar. I can't be the only one, otherwise the manufacturers wouldn't be making "throwback" products with "real sugar".

Also take a look at nature - hummingbird food is sugar and water and all the info out there says not to use artificial sweetner.

Not exactly. There's plenty of research out there showing HFCS isn't metabolized the same way other sugars are. And the only info I've seen saying it was is by the Corn Refiners.

It's the same with other food products. Lard was the standard fat used until Crisco came out. Then lard was all of the sudden the devil. Now research is showing lard is healthier for you than hydrogenated fats like shortening because your bodies knows how to handle natural fats. Same with butter vs. margerine. Your body doesn't know how to process "fake" fats.

Drink a "throwback" Pepsi and then drink a "regular" Pepsi.

You cant tell me that cane sugar and HFCS are the same thing.

((Not specifically you, migtig. That was a generic "you"))

Corn sugar is real natural sugar, just derived from corn instead of sugar cane. It's cheaper because of what CG said - we subsidize corn, not cane - and that's why it's so widely used.

To me, there's a huge difference. (I answered anyway)

Sorry - when I say real sugar I'm always referring to cane sugar. Cane sugar and corn processed man-made sugar are in no way the same to me. BTW, all that processing isn't good for any product we are trying to ingest imho. But then again, I always tend to think of corn as "animal feed" not for human consumption.

Have you read Omnivore's Dilemma? It's a very interesting read!

I want soda and Ring Dings and Cheeze Doodles and Cool Whip and Ranch Flavored Doritos!!!

There was a show on a long time ago, probably still on You Tube... the guy put all these weird toxic chemicals on a table, nothing you would EVER consider ingesting. They were all ingredients in Cool Whip.... :barf:
