Hiking Trails in SoMd

Well, let's see I have seen copperheads at St Marys River St Park and Calvert Cliffs, so go there.jk Actually Calvert is OK. Trail to the beach is the only one I have been on.

Myrtle Point lots of places to check out and and most end at the river. Mostly level.

Yeah, I just went to Calvert Cliffs for the first time yesterday... Just wondering if there was anything better or just as good locally.

Probably not, but not much experience. Cool trails are in the Mountains. Not convenient, but worth the trip. White Oak Trail in the Blue Ridge was nice. Cool waterfall about 4 miles down and I think a couple others further on. Take a dip if you want. Not MD after all. Always wanted to hike the whole way down and have a car to be waiting at the bottom. If you want to hike up, maybe we could work something out. lol I think a 10 mile hike, not sure. "Bit" of elevation involved. Look into "Old Rag" I wanted to go and found out it got kind of crowded. That turned me off right away.

If you can get to Old Rag early on a weekday in the winter, there are very few people there. Whenever I've done the hike then, I only see 2 or 3 other people. What a great hike.

I'll bet! Bit of a rock scramble here and there?

St Mary's River State Park is a good hike, 7 miles around. Cedarville State Forest up by Waldorf has a 7 mile loop with a couple 1-2 mile loops. Level, but scenic.

St. Mary's River State Park trail has been beat to hell by horseback riders and bike riders. I do the loop a couple of times a week with my dog, but you absolutely have to watch what you're doing. Those exposed roots will reach out and grab ya. Oh, and watch out for the piles and piles of horse crap in the middle of the trail.

I saw bald eagles and osprey there yesterday. I was paddling and not hiking.

We got there @8:00 in the morning and had the entire lake to ourselves.

I ride my bike there all the time. Bikes don't tear up the trails near as much as the horses. Plus, all those new bridges and cross overs and plank trails through the bog are courtesy of the local mountain bikers.

If you see someone riding rudely or off the trails, please accept my apology on their behalf, 99% of mountain bikers are courteous, and very conscious of trail etiquette and know we'll be the first ones tossed off the trails.

(The 1000 pound hooved poop machines crowd seem to hold sway somehow)

Check out Chestnut Land Trust. I've done a few trails there. Not as well kept as Calvert Cliffs, but also not as crowded.

Trails at St. Mary's City

there are also some very pleasant easy walks around the St. Mary's City historical area. You park at the visitors center parking lot and go left (away from the building). No fees required (not asked for, this is not a sneaky tip lol). At the junction of the trail and the road about a 1/4 mile down should be a box with trail maps. Some good history placards along the way.

St. Mary's health department also has a nice handout booklet on walking trails in SoMD

Yeah, I am just looking for different local trails to hike weekly...
