Holiday Ideas for the Tech Inclined

Those would make fun driving goggles!

 actually on further thought I shouldn't consider those. But only because he's beta testing the new google phone and really likes it. I'd guess the oculus isn't compatible with it.

Yeah buddy. Or a good .308 like a FN AR 16" that will accurately reach out and touch you to 600 yds, with an EoTech holographic, night vision compatible sight, in conjunction with an EoTech 3X multiplier to really rock your day. It rocks mine.

Tech enough?

That's tech enough, but I don't know everything that he owns. And this time of year is really horrible, because he usually already owns a better version of everything.

Yeah buddy. Or step up a notch to a good .308 like a FN AR 16" that will accurately reach out and touch you to 600 yds, with a Nikon M-308 scope. For the AR-15, an EoTech holographic, night vision compatible sight, in conjunction with an EoTech 3X multiplier to really rock your day. It rocks mine.

Well, the problem is the market. Not a lot of devices do both anyway, and those that do under $100 are the old painful kind. Part of what you pay for is the ease of programming. It can learn any command not in the database. But I can't think of one it doesn't get from there. Harmony does have, or did have RF capable remotes, but usually only on the higher end models, since so very few things use RF remotes, very few people buy them. That drives price up. Now, about that programming, you do know that with Harmony, you lose all the tedious "programming" of entering endless codes til you find the one that best matches what you have. And that best match usually gives you like %60 functionality. Hell, when I programmed it to control my PS3 through an IR dongle, it actually sets up buttons to match the ones on the PS3 controller like circle and square.

We've had this remote for years. I bought it for my husband as a wedding gift. Anyway, it controls the tv, the VCR, the wi-fi, the surround sound, the video game consoles, etc and so on. Everything else for home automation is run through our phones, but could run through the remote. He's gotten new equipment since the remote's purchase and it's easy (for him) to program it in. Best part is it's easy to operate, I just look for the picture and touch it and all the components needed (surround sound with the tv) turn on. It has a charging base that it goes to every night when we go to sleep so we never have to hunt for the remote. It's larger than my cell, but smaller than my tablet.

It says it's discontinued, but I'm sure there's a newer version available, or you might be able to find a great deal on it elsewhere since it is discontinued.

I always preferred the learning capability over programming codes. Just point my old remote at the new one and capture the IR code. This made for easy mix-and-match of capability for each controller preset (might have the volume go to the TV while the directional controls go to the Roku and the stop/play go to the DVD, etc.)

My Harmony 350 is a very nice IR remote, and it does learn, but it seems to have issues with rolling-IR codes (volume up/down type). The correct code for everything has been in their database, but I see no way to pull codes from multiple devices onto a single device using the myHarmony website, so I need to pick a base device (like TV) and then learn all the non-TV codes.

Better hope he is not like me. Wife asks what I want, I tell her this or that would be cool, but after a bit of personal reflection, oftentimes I find that it IS really cool and I want it now, so I go out and buy it myself. Then it starts over again.......

I think I see your problem. What you need is to say up an activity. From what I read, that remote, while it can control 5 or more devices, only has one activity. "Watch TV". What you do is program that activity by adding devices to that. Then assign controls to devices in the activity. So when you set it up, it will ask you what device you use for channel selection. And what device you use for volume. If you need the TV set to a specific input it will ask you to set that up.

I will look into that the next time I mess with the remote. From what I remember previously, the "Activity" button is more of a macro. It will perform a set series of actions (like turn on TV, change input, turn on DVR).

:ohwell: Are you my husband?

I decided to not go tech after I get robbed of an amazon deal of a day. Besides, I honestly never know what it is that I'm actually looking at. If gadgets would advertise "I'm a cool new tech gadget that nobody has yet and I work with every other tech gadget", I'd buy it. But all that info on capacity and gb and ports and crap has me

Of course, I could just be saying that because I caught my husband reading the forums last night.

Well, in the "boot sequence" that you start when you press the "Watch TV" button, it does act like a macro. But once it's done that, it also assigns specific actions to specific devices as directed by you when setting up that activity. Ones with more activities allow a greater range of activities. So, when I hit the "Watch Netflix"button on my Harmony One, it turns on the TV and sets the input to HDMI 2. Once it does that, the DVR control set is set to the NuWave IR dongle in the PS3 to allow me to FF pause and rewind, and volume control to the TV. When I select "Watch TV", it sets the TV to HDMI 2, sets the channel and DVR controls to the Motorola DVR, and keeps the volume set to the TV. Once I get my surround rewired, and go back to the receiver, it will take me maybe 5 minutes to set those activities to run through there, so the input changes are on the receiver, as is the volume, while the DVR controls stay assigned to whichever device they are currently on.

At one point, my remote had four activities, and a standalone device for an IR controlled floor fan.

And then guys wonder why most of their SO's end up buying them clothes for xmas

Normally I just order my own presents but…

I just made an Amazon wish list that I put on Mrs. Misfits Amazon prime account.

Everything is in order of “must have now” to “it can wait a day”

I hope this works. :coffee:
