Home Theater

I've been researching home theater and it seems to me that it it virtually impossible not to get ripped off. HTIB is crap, they tell you. Now there are 7.1 systems. Where the hell are you supposed to put all these speakers? Is the whole thing just a giant rip-off to convince nit-wits that they have to spend $5K on a system that will sound like #### in your home anyway because you will never get it set up correctly? :cussing:

Bogie! You MUST run to the nearest Bose store and check out their system!!! While in Nashville we happened upon a Bose store and were completely taken with their top o' the line system. It is beyond incredible!

"The Bose® Lifestyle® 48 DVD home entertainment system will change the way you think about movies, music ... even your CD collection. Digitally store and organize up to 340 hours of music in the media center, featuring a progressive scan DVD/CD player. The ADAPTiQ® audio calibration system analyzes your room and adjusts your Lifestyle® system’s sound for great performance. Tiny, award-winning Jewel Cube® speaker arrays fill your room with wondrous surround sound. And there’s more. Bose® link allows connections for compatible Bose products in as many as 14 additional rooms."

CHECK IT OUT

This system is awesome. It is "smart" enough to listen to itself from 5 points in a room and will self-adjust so that the sound is crystal clear no matter where you happen to be in the room. This system is also expandable. For another $600, you can get a transmitter, remote and speakers for another room that will allow you to access the pre-loaded music in the home base. You could have someone watching a movie in the main room, yet you could be listening to your choice of music in another. You have to check this out!

What Kwillia said..:yay:..I have the Lifestyle 28 because it suits my particular needs just fine. It also has the 10 jewel cube speakers and DVD/CD player in one. People come in and hear the sound I have and then start looking for my speakers. I have the Bose radio in my bedroom. Before these newer systems came out I had the Lifestyle 12 but there have been so many upgrades since that old system. Go online to Bose.com or get to a store. The Bose system is phenomenal.

The Bose boxes are quite nice! I didn't get one, though. Just picked up a Yamaha 5860 receiver, and a set of Polk RM20 satellite speakers + subwoofer. The Yamaha receiver includes a microphone to auto-adjust the sound (like the Bose). It cost a little more than the Bose system, but that was mainly the speakers...

But the Bose system has sooooo much to offer. For example, the remote has an "encore" button. If a song from your music collection comes on that you realllllly, really are digging you simply hit the encore button and Bose will start searching your collection for songs that are in sync. I could be in the mood for my classic R & B and I won't have to go thru the songs myself. It's as if it has it's own built in DJ.

It's all a matter of preference and what is within your budget. I bought an awesome RCA HTIB system from Target for $329. IT sounds as good as any Bose system I have heard (Speaker placement is all that really matters), and it has a built in AM/FM tuner. Not to mention the fact that the rear speakers are wireless, so I didn't have to run speaker wires all the way around the room. My brother built himself a $4k Bose surround system, and he even says that mine sounds better. Just my opinion, since ya asked. It's ultimately up to you. Do you want great sound at a great price, or do you want the status symbol for considerably more? :peace:

Everyone hears different so listen to a bunch of stereos. I didn't pay $4k for my Bose and don't think it is a status symbol. It's a stereo system with 10 omnidirectional speakers that puts out some awesome sound at a reasonable price. I have sound bouncing off walls and coming from all directions. It all depends on what you want your system to do.

:yeahthat: You are overlooking the technology that Bose has to offer. The $4000 Bose system I'm talking about will adjust the sound quality from 5 different points in a room so that the sound is flawless no matter where you are. It will also self-adjust so that if you are dippy enough to put your speaker on a shelf and muffle the sound waves it will "unmuffle" for you. In fact, this is the feature I think Bogie would be most interested in.... and the fact that the speakers are small enough to work in any room without overtaking it. I am not a "name brand" person. I couldn't care less about designer things. However, I do believe that there is something to the saying... "you get what you pay for". The $4000 system I linked to was the top of the line system I am interested in. Bogie could cut that price in half and still have a helluva sound system with numerous extra features.

My Accord had a Bose system. It kicked ass. :dude:

Sometimes I'd turn around and expect to see Englebert Humperdink sitting in my back seat. :dude:

Oh I know, I didn't need all that so I got the Bose LS 28. Being an electronically challeneged woman was no problem in me setting up the stereo myself. I got the stereo for my needs and the radio(free) for $2400. I hear sounds I have never heard on other stereos and with the ADAPTiQ® audio calibration system, getting the sound perfect was SO easy. I listen to alot of music and I hear the difference. There is no distortion when the volume is cranked and it does sound like the band is right in my living room.
If someone finds something cheaper and with less speakers and it is fine for them, buy it. I will always own Bose, not for the name but for the quality and the sound. :flowers:

I'm not sure how you are even supposed to 'listen' to different systems since if you go into a store none of the systems are set up the way they would be for home theater sound. Also, I was on an AV forum last where all they did was knock Bose. I just want something that will sound better than stereo and I don't need it to have a giant 'eXtreme Motorsports' decal plastered across the windshield or a nut sack dangling from the hitch point. I guess I'll just have to trust Consumer Reports or something, because I'm certainly not trusting a commissioned sales person.

bose speakers are overpriced tin cans. Ok, maybe not THAT bad, but you can do better for less money. Some like the sound of the bose speakers because they tend to "soften" the sound so to speak. Someone who listens to bose speakers for a few years, and suddenly switch to something like paradigm(sp?!) tend to not like the new sound, eventhough it is more "true". Same goes the other way around as well. Buy whatever sounds best to you. Some places will let you take speakers home to see how they sound in your room. If you can do this, it is definately the best way to go.

If you are on any dedicated HT forum, you are almost never going to get anyone to recommend Bose. While usually the Bose systems sound ok, they are generally considered dramatically over priced for what you get by most people. It is also generally agreed that once you get out of the HTIB range or speakers, you can get vastly better performance than Bose for the same or less money. Bose seem to be good for the crowd that just wants to set up some smallish speakers that no one will notice, and forget about them.

:yeahthat: I am interested in the Bose system because it is "fool proof", I love the sound, I love the small speakers, but most of all, I love the fact that I can load all the CDs we own into the system and can program different "mood" buttons so that I have the music I want to hear "on call" in the room I want to hear it in because it exandable from room to room as well. I haven't purchased it yet because I do want to check out the reports on the system and whether or not there is anything comparable to what it has to offer. I'm using the Bose system I saw as the benchmark. If I find something of better value, then I'll know it. If I find something that claims to be of better value, then I'll have something to judge their claim against.

I have to agree with ST here; I purchased a Paradigm speaker system(front/center/surround/subwoofer) 4 years ago, and have been happy ever since. Power is from a 110 watt p/channel Dolby Digital Sony receiver, and this system rocks!

Why Paradigm? They were highly rated in Sound & Vision magazine, plus one another asset/point for that company: All they make are speakers; that's it.
