Bogie! You MUST run to the nearest Bose store and check out their system!!! While in Nashville we happened upon a Bose store and were completely taken with their top o' the line system. It is beyond incredible!

"The Bose® Lifestyle® 48 DVD home entertainment system will change the way you think about movies, music ... even your CD collection. Digitally store and organize up to 340 hours of music in the media center, featuring a progressive scan DVD/CD player. The ADAPTiQ® audio calibration system analyzes your room and adjusts your Lifestyle® system’s sound for great performance. Tiny, award-winning Jewel Cube® speaker arrays fill your room with wondrous surround sound. And there’s more. Bose® link allows connections for compatible Bose products in as many as 14 additional rooms."

CHECK IT OUT

This system is awesome. It is "smart" enough to listen to itself from 5 points in a room and will self-adjust so that the sound is crystal clear no matter where you happen to be in the room. This system is also expandable. For another $600, you can get a transmitter, remote and speakers for another room that will allow you to access the pre-loaded music in the home base. You could have someone watching a movie in the main room, yet you could be listening to your choice of music in another. You have to check this out!

I have a great tip on this one! Go to the Bose oulet in Delaware, outside Rehoboth Beach, they have the full systems that used to be demos in their stores, factory redone w/ the full warranty for 1/2 the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've had ours for 4+ years and it sounds as awsome as it did day 1!

Blechhh! We are not gonna start taking warm showers together, got it?

Seriously, when I was researching stereo components years ago in Arizona, the guys at Jerry's Audio advised selecting companies that devoted all their energies into making only a few products, ie. Bose, AR(back then) Klipsch, B&W, Tannoy, Denon, etc.

The only thing left to do is go audition these brands, select one that "speaks" to you(pun intended) which fits your budget.

Remember the stereo shop scenes in "Ruthless People," where Judge Reinhold explains the Dominator MX-10's male marketing strategy?

I'm no expert but my BIL got a Denon receiver and a set of Klipsch surround speakers, and that set up sounds great. Just my .02.

Super Genius
I'm happy with my JBL speakers (good enough for the pros, good enough for me), but I want to get a new receiver. Unfortunately, very few receivers have HDMI inputs/switching and the ones that do cost several $k. I definitely want my receiver to do my video switching as well as the audio.

Klipsch and Denon are generally a nice combination.
What speakers you like are a totally personal thing, so naturally you shoud go listen for yourself. I personally prefer the Klipsch sound, so I have a setup of:
2 Klipsch Cornwalls, 3 Klipsch Heresys and I am using some smaller Klipsch bookshelfs for my rear centers. (7.1) For subwoofers I use SV. http://svsubwoofers.com/ are hard to beat. It is internet direct only, but an awesome company to deal with, that has awesome products. Note however they are the opposite of Bose, their subwoofers are HUGE, and will not blend in with a room unless it already looks like a dedicated theater. I use a Marantz HT Receiver that I love.
It is time consuming to put together a nice matched HT setup however, and if that isn't were you want to spend your time, get some sort of pre-put together system. Some folks want a HT to spend hours play with, and constantly tweak , and some just want to sit down occasionally and watch a movie. Buy appropriately.
