Homeless in Waldorf

Ok this is kinda sad. Yesterday I was riding around in Waldorf and I saw a bunch of trash in the woods from the road. I happened to notice a metal grate leaning against a tree that I could use. Well I pull over to check it out, This was not just an ordinary dump, I heard a dog barking and looked closer.I could see that it looked like little tents were made out of the trash. So I got back in my truck and this lady came out of there, said she lived there and :blahblah: :blahblah: Kinda scary that people are just living in the woods, but also that this is happening to begin with. Makes you step back and take a look at your life and be grateful of all that you have.

It is sad.... I've always wondered why homeless people stay here. It's cold! Why don't they start walking South?

I have been debating on whether I should turn them in or not. I mean from what I saw they are not hurting anyone, But knowing my luck in a few weeks I'll hear about a group of frozen homeless people, or who knows what if they ain't right in the head and wind up hurting someone... I just don't know what I should do. First instinct says leave them be

That's a good first instinct! I agree.

If you turn them in, they will just move to another location. I'd want to be homeless in the South! And have 2 large refrigerator boxes so I could have a 2 story...

I know that turning them in would good intentions on your part but it would probably just make life a little more difficult for them.

Thats what I was thinking.

See I'm the type of person that always try to help other people, I don't like turning people away, but I guess in this case they did not ask for help, so I should just stay out of it

PG County has a "crisis intervention" hotline - also used as a resource line - if ever you feel so inclined, look up the number and keep it handy. Often, if a family is down on their luck, this resource can place them, sometimes in a hotel overnight, then shelter for the immediate future, then work on helping them help themselves.

I am not suggesting that it is your problem to solve their problem - I am merely stating that if it hurt your head enough to bring it up, carry the number on a card, attach $.50 and a voucher for a cup of coffee and try to let them help themselves...

Dats what I think I would do. I would do it for an animal, for sure.... You know, help get it out of the cold.

I would call them in, They will be in a warm place with food and if they need help they will get it.

Homeless people/homeless animals do seem to stick together.

Mag,

It is sad, and I think I know the area you talk about. We have next to no resources available in Charles County for homeless people, and they only offer up part of the facility if it gets below 32 degrees at the Fuller House off of Post Office Road.

There is an area off of Rt 5 back in the woods where there are busted up trailers, more like trailer shells, many have free standing wood stoves in the center for heat and that is the only source of heat. They have several homeless animals for some reason, including rats :barf: .

Thats not the place I saw. Yesterday was warm out so I don't know if they have heaters, They Did have an elaborate set-up though.

The Manson family started out in tents in the woods before they killed that ranch owner and took over his place.

There was an article I believe it was in the Washington Post but it may have been the MD Independent a while ago about the homeless in Charles County. There's a lot more then we realize. The article profiled a man and a woman who by choice were living in the woods. Finding shelter for men in Charles County is hard but not impossible. There are waiting lists and such to get into the shelter. For women there are more options. When I was a freshmen in highschool I volunteered at the woman's shelter in Hughesville. Some very sad stories. I hate to sound harsh but I feel little sympathy for "homeless" people. Homeless people being the ones that live in the woods and such. I know I've never been in that situation but from my perspective there are too many other options and our government is set up to help those in need. I think that most people that are homeless and living on the streets, in the woods etc. are there by their own chosing.

Dog serves as furnace by snuggling up at night. One dog night = cool, Two dog night = cold, Three dog night = great concert.

Well I have to say in all honesty if I was ever in that situation I think I would Go in the woods and make a new home, I don't think I could take help from a shelter.
